Laptop hard drive got screwed up the other day, Buksi recommended the computer shop by the Shell garage which by all accounts are very good, but it was a Sunday so couldn't go there.
The one next to Halex wine shop, near Grand Market, was open so went in there. Can't speak more highly of them. they stock hard drives up to 750GB, changed hard drive over, put Windows XP on plus security software for free (they sell the security in shop for 599 Baht). They did it all the same day for 500 Baht labour, plus 4,200 for the hard drive.
Best service I've ever had in Thailand, oh apart from the 2nd floor of Nana third door in on the right .........

IT Help in Hua Hin shops
Looks like they've cleaned their act up then, that place used to be shocking for service and prices. 4,200 baht for a 750 Gig hard drive is a damn good price!
I still rate IT-net next to the shell garage, its the only place in Hua Hin that offers Panthip prices on hardware. I need to pop in there Monday as my PSU is toast so I'm on the laptop now.

Sorry, what I was trying to say in OP is that they stock up to 750GB, the one I got was 150GB.
Also got one of them Seagate mobile external hard drives, 3,500 I think. Back-ups the whole hard drive in minutes and you can plug it in another PC and your whole document folder structure appears as is (for dumbos like me who never knew about them before).
Good there's at least two decent enough places in town.
D-M, was it a mass pant ant decant ?

Well done for getting good service at the shop next to Halex. I've had nothing more than nightmares there and would never recommend it to anyone.
Quite recently, I took my pc in with a power problem. I suggested that it needed a new power supply. A few days later they rang and I collected it complete with a new power supply. Cost of over 3,000 baht!!
Reinstalled it back home and found that they'd pretty much killed my hard drive. Took it back and they told me the hard drive was no good and I needed a new one. Gave them a spare drive I had and asked them to install it as the primary drive and use the existing drive as the secondary. Yep, they did that. But nothing worked well. Finished up calling Brian (I'm sure he's known), spent 12 hours working on my pc. The drives had been installed with conflicting addresses and was therefore corrupting each other. He did manage to recover all my data and reinstall the main software.
So what turned out to be quite a simple operation finished up costing me an arm and a leg and a lot of headaches. Never again will I go there.

I summary SJ you paid well over the odds for the hard drive. a 150GB should be anything between 2,000 and 2,500 Baht depending upon make and interface. Plus 500 Baht to install it. Nice work if you can get it.Limey711 wrote:Super Joe

If Limey is correct then that means that the only official Microsoft vendor in Prachuap is selling dodgy copies.
It should not be applicable anyway, the license that came with laptop for XP will be valid for the new copy.
The external disk casings range from 300 to 1,300. Disks are currently at about 12 Baht per GB for disks between 250 and 500.
I would recommend from personal experience that people who doss down on your settee, go to India, carry fake MCSE papers and call themselves Brian should not be let anywhere near anything more complicated than a hairdryer.

As stated above turn off automatic updates as they've put a pirate copy of XP on which will be rendered useless if it tries to connect to MS.
Regarding the power supply, I need to get one of these today, should cost no more than a grand for a standard 450 watt - we'll see what they come out with. Installation is a two minute job.
Note to all: Please post any computer problems here first so we can at least offer some advice and a price guide before you go off getting fleeced at Hua Hin computer shops!

Limey, you're right about the error message but they turned off the automatic updates as Buksi mentions.
Looks like they do charge over the odds for the drives then. It was a 'Kingston' type, don't know if that makes any difference to the price.
Looks like the one near the Shell garage is a better option unless you need it back same day.

Quick update on the power supply issue if anyone else has the same problem - my shop of choice is closed on Sunday so popped into the place across the street from Soi 80. 450 watt PSU, 590 baht, put it in myself which took approximately 90 seconds and the desktop lives!

Just a comment about something said above about 'backup's'. I'm currently using mozy.com, off site backup. Free for 1gb and $4.50 per month if greater. With 1gb you can at least store your important files, but perhaps not your entire system. It also prevents the need to buy back-up devices which can be lost, stolen, damaged etc. Any comments pro or con? Pete

I'm a fan of IT-Net, too. Lately, I've had a few laptop and desktop problems. His prices for hardware are the same as thanni.com. Ton has fixed them quickly (same day or next day) at a very reasonable price. Plus he and his wife are a lot more friendly and customer-oriented than the one next to Halex.
