Beer 'born' date

Post by margaretcarnes »

Filling from the front ain't just in hotels Spitfire! I gave up trying to get staff to do it in my HH bars. Easier just to keep an eye on what was going on during the evening, then re-arrange the fridge after closing.
Same went for the chiller cabinet, as well as checking the chiller stat every night. You could bet your life someone always turned it the wrong way.
Singha lollies anyone?

Then somebody is impersonating them in every supermarket in the land! Pride is available everywhere in tins, they are cheaper than bottles to buy.

Guess - I suspect the England you know is disappearing fast!! :?
Yes I really should have said "came from".

I heard that Young's closed a few years ago. Now Fullers doing tins. sacrilege.

I hope they still brew the real products.

Still I suppose that companies like Fuller's can benefit from cans. Ease and low cost of distribution.

So if the net effect is that the Chiswick brewery stays in place then OK.

I suppose you will be telling that has closed next.

I just can't believe that here are people who buy cans of beer from supermarkets and take them home to drink in front of the TV. I thought that was just the fat git in "Keeping up Appearances."

So what happened to CAMRA and what happened to the micro brewery revolution.?

BTW, there was not a square inch of spare space in Chiswick so where are the cans made or have I missed another takeover by Interbrew?

Not only has England changed but it seems canned beer has improved according to this site. VS right, time does fly like a banana.

Will we get it in Thailand?

Guess, I go back to Nottingham a couple of weekends a year and CAMERA and the Real Ale movement is still very popular. I think there are four or five small breweries going now and they’re pretty successful.
A pub that my brother frequents just outside of the city has an incredible range of beers on tap with bitters, milds, stouts and even some of the traditionally brewed continental beers; it’s very impressive.

Yup, lots of micro-breweries now. Fullers is still there and going strong. Youngs couldn't resist the value of their land in the centre of Wandsworth and merged with Charles Wells (Bombadier?)? Its pubs are all still there and its available elsewhere and still tastes good - thats an odd one to me because as we know, its all in the water - maybe they shift tankers from the Thames up there?! :?

Having been brought up as a Ruddles man - I was raised just 12 odd miles from the brewery at Langham - I really enjoy that brew whenever I go back to the UK.
Now, come on Thailand, start importing some cans of Ruddles County. I appreciate that a barrel of it won't travel very well.

I used to drive down the A606 to Oakham myself once in a while to drink Ruddles Lomu.

When back in the UK I find the only pub chain selling reasonably priced quality beer is Wetherspoons, they offer a full range of bitters with different guest ales, better than the Eurofizz masquerading a lager anyway. Perhaps there is an entrepreneur somewhere in HH who could start his own microbrewery.

BW: Are you a Suffook boi? I was fortunate enough to spend the first 35 of my years within spitting distance of the Adnams Brewery. Mind you, a well-kept barrel of Greene King IPA is a close rival. You mention Stonham Aspal - I wish you hadn't. I'm now salivating thinking about a cool draught Aspal Cider. There's also another micro-brewery in Earl Soham producing a great session ale called Victoria.

Chang is my preferred choice here - but, quite frankly, there isn't much choice.

At least Ruddles went to another decent brewer - Greene King. Their ales were easily found east of Peterborough towards Cambridge.
Adnams is a great brew.
STEVE G: if you've been that way, then you may well know The Jackson Stops. Ruddles County poured from the tap, straight from the barrel. 30 odd years ago, the landlady decided that two and a half pints of the stuff was enough for me. No amount of sweet-talking did me any good. We just jumped in the cars (I wasn't driving) and headed down to Oundle. More Ruddles!!
VS, you obviously know your beers.

Guess sez he can't believe there are people who buy beer from the supermarkets to drink at home in front of the TV!

Yet another of those 'been away too long' moments Guess! It would be great to be able to flash the cash in the hostelries more often, if -

Your mates could afford to do the same, and -

You could always sit outside of a balmy evening, and -

When forced inside the hostelry by inclement weather you could light a fag in there! and -

You could get a taxi home without doubling the price of the evening out.

Seriously - its the smoking ban that's really done it for me. Go to the pub once a week these days. Still struggle to balance the nicotine urges with the necessary social graces of conversation, but the nicotine still wins sometimes. Much less stressful to have a tinny at home

Even a home of brewing like Burton-on-Trent has changed a lot according to people I know back home(Bass, Ind. Coupe etc all reside there). Think even the Marmite factory is there. Anyone ever driven through there when they're brewing beer and Marmite at the same time? Interesting smell.
Agree about the smoking ban implications and the fact that many drink at home now as its crazy prices everywhere.

Perhaps we can make this into a comprehensive list of independent brewers, real ales they produced and who owns them now.

Morlands merged with Greene King before I left the UK but still retained both brands. The only change to the public was that the larger houses would add a pump for County of Speckled Hen. I thinks the law still stated another ale from another unattached brewer must be available.

Adnams. Broadside, one of the more consistent pints. Was the brewery in Southwold?

Then there were all the Wiltshire Breweries such as Hop Back, Wadworths and about 8 others, Gales of Horndean (excellent). Then some very good Welsh Breweries which reminds me:

STEVE is really CAMERA or was that a misspelling? If so, do they hav thei own CAMWRA in Wales.

Beer 'born' date

I remember having Badger Beer down South in the 70's. Somerset I think - brewed by Brock ?
Hull Brewery closed around early 80's and all their pubs were taken over by Mansfield brewery, but a 'micro' Hull Brewery was started up later in the Minerva pub. I don't think it lasted very long, but maybe HHTel knows more.
