I also wondered if some sort of informal fostering had happened so thanks for that Pete. Could explain a lot. It's not so long ago that similar things happened in England. We like to believe we've 'got it right' now, but IMO it's the Thais who still care for their own in a proper family way.

The adoption theory does make some sense. Tactful enquiries on that theme have not yielded a clear response, and I'm beginning to think there may be a bit of family shame concealed here.

Her mother does not seem keen to resolve the issue, and simply tells her that getting an ID is too expensive.

It's not the girl's fault if she was born on the wrong side of the blanket, and she deserves to be able to go out and enjoy life like any other teenager.

I think when I come back to Thailand at the end of the year I'll go up country to her village, and pay my respects to the local Puyai - see if things can be discreetly resolved without causing embarassment..

Good luck and let us know how it turns out Tom. Nereus's contact info for that foundation may be something to look at as well. Pete

Yes good luck Tom. Many families have their secrets but in my own experience its usually a relief to know the truth. Lets hope the Mother can be helped to understand that she's not helping the poor girl at all, and as Pete says let us know how it turns out
