Further to above......I challenge anyone (multiple beer reward) to find an American white couple retired here, where the husband was a VN Veteran stationed in Thailand or Vietnam during the war.

You'll find American white couples, but as retired teachers here or some other previous occupation.

Those who stayed true to their love back home when they were young men here want only to forget about their loin pain during that year.

They've tried to wash this place from their minds.

No way will they come back here given those memories and physical denials. Pete

I bet if we saw the Philippines figures our American cousins would be streets ahead of other Western nations. There's a first for everything :D

Also I thought those figures from WL were on the low side, but having read it properly now they are arrivals at the new airport, there's other stats for border crossings (probably part of the reason for the new 15 day rule thing). Then you have direct flights into all other airports.

UK has around 1M visitors I think.

A little geography-lesson for our American and English friends:
Scandinavia are Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
The Nordic Countries are the three above plus Finland, Farao Islands,Iceland and Greenland.
All countries with very small populations:
Sweden app. 9 million, 207000 to Thailand= 2.3% of pop.
Denmark 5.5 million, 105000 to thailand= 2% of pop.
Norway 4.6 million, 84000 to Thailand=1.8% 0f pop.
Finland 5.4 million, 85000 to Thailand=1.6% of pop.
Compared to app. 670000 visitors from the UK of a population of 64 million, which in round numbers is about 1% of total population.
Pete could you please forward to Sarah Palin.

Certainly Hua Hin itself is very popular with Nordic/Scandinavian visitors, both tourists and many who spend the winter there.
I meet many Nordics when I'm away working and they've almost all heard of Hua Hin whereas if you mention the town to an Englishman who has no connections with Thailand you'll normally get a blank look.
Having visited the Nordic area several times, I would say that those who can spend summer in their own spectacular countries and winter in Hua Hin have an enviable lifestyle.

Or put another way the little old UK sends 40% more tourists to Thailand than Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland all put together :D

In all seriousness thaiorchid they are impressive figures. Didn't realise the populations were that low in those countries.

It would still be interesting to see what percentage of these are resident in Thailand, compared to British ex pats and why the figures for visitors are so much higher (percentage wise) compared to countries with much larger populations.
I know that these are countries with a very cold climate for much of the year but there are many warm countries much closer than Thailand, so why are the numbers so high?

Not sure that we (British and American friends) need a lesson in geography, we all managed to find Thailand and that is much further away from the UK than the above countries.

In response americans living here. My wife and I are both born and raised in the USA and have lived in the HH area full time for 3 years. While 2 years of that has been in Cha Am (does that count?).

HHsimon & HHdolly are an American couple, although they now live in BKK.

Other than that I haven't met any other American couple, although that certainly does not mean there aren't any more around. Have met heaps of English couples, and other European couples.

But I agree with HHfarang that there are lots and lots of places closer to the US that welcome retirees with open arms.

We had retired in Australia for 12 years + and then they moved the goal post and did away with their retirement visa but that is another story.

So we considered Panama or Thailand and decided on Thailand, but it was a close decision. Didn't care much for Belize or Mexico and liked Costa Rica but not as much as Thailand. The Caribbean was nice lived in Cayman Island for a while and enjoyed it but it was very expensive and tended to get Island fever there.

The long :run: trip from LOS to the USA is a big disadvantage. It is very expensive and very tiring. Consequently we don't go often.

For the most part we are happy here. But like anyone that has traveled much you tend to get itchy feet once in a while and think somewhere else would be paradise. But we have traveled and lived in enough places to know there isn't any perfect place so make the best of what you have.

The first white American couple I was aware of living in HH moved there about 2002. Her name was Val - can't remember the husbands name, and they've maybe moved on.
One of the earliest expat settlers in the HH area was a Danish guy who'd been a ships captain when he discovered LOS (and spread the word to his crews I think!) I met him around 99/early 2000 and he'd already been there about 20 years.
But yes it's quite true that many Brits go blank when the name HuaHin is mentioned, whereas Pattaya and Phuket are instantly recognised, probably for the wrong reasons. I quite hope it stays that way too. (For HH I mean!)
Many package deals you see advertised for HH are, on closer inspection, at resorts nearer to Chaam, but the HH name will be easier to market.
By the way - we are talking about Brits in general but what about a HH breakdown into English, Irish, Welsh and Scots? Cos there always seem to be a lot of Scottish folk living there and hardly any Welsh. Mind you there aren't many sheep in LOS

I am a vet but it was Korea and not Vietnam.

From that you can probably tell that I am older than dirt. But life is good!

Yes, Norm is right, Donald and Dolly are a U.S. couple and Donald is a Viet Nam Veteran Marine. They are the one U.S. couple I mentioned in the previous post.

Also, I had a bit of "oldtimers" disease in my earlier post... I do know one single American male very well (he's a member of this forum!) who lives here full time. Guess I forgot about him as he has a local live-in and I usually think of him as married.

Norm, either Costa Rica or Panama would have been my expat retirement choice if I weren't married to a Thai, but I would have more than likely stayed in the U.S. and just moved to a cheaper small town area. I spent three holidays in Costa Rica shortly before coming to Thailand on the trip where I met the missus. It was cheap and the people were friendly. If they didn't speak English, they spoke Spanish which is a damned site easier than Thai to figure out since it uses the same alphabet. The diving was good but I have to admit I never saw a golf course there.

KD,

You'll have to ask her that... she's very polite so if I ask she may not tell me the truth!
