Christmas Tree
A colleague of mine in Jakarta bought a long box with a picture of a Christmas tree on the front from a stall, naturally assuming it was a fair size tree.
When he got home and opened the box he found it contained three small trees in a line, which didn't really suit the huge string of lights that he'd bought from the same stall!

Christmas Tree
Love those house decorations HHF! Very well done without being tacky.
Different story often here in the UK with some really tacky and overdone house decs. Plastic Santas up ladders etc.
I had a wander through Hull centre today and the Councils' decorations are really disappointing, almost austerity these days. Same story in many towns I think - they won't pay for decorations/trees and claim to be ecofriendly by saving electricity. Humbug!
In Poole, Dorset, the Council has erected a 33 foot astroturf cone as an alternative to a real tree which, it is claimed, is safer. It won't blow over or shed it's branches. More humbug!
How is it that places like Singapore and Bangkok do Christmas much better now?

A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

cos they ain't as easily bullied or manipulated by vociferous minorities or have politically correct wowsers imbedded in their councils !
AND have a better understanding of what peace and tolerance means in at least 1 religious paradigm.

I'm not a bah humbug type, and always enjoyed Xmas back in Canada. Big family get together, lots of good food and drink, real fun, but I've never really gotten into the spirit of things here though. I've no kids, so for my wife and I it's just another day. We usually do something for the New Year tho.
HHF: nice deco on the Fla house...very classy.
I ask as wondering if any of us with a mixed family has gone completely native, and basically ignores the holiday in terms of decorations, gift giving, big traditional dinner etc.

Jaime: No problem. They'll be selling them in Market Village and the little supermarket in the centre of town. Tinsel and baubles galore, plus those 'tasteful' Merry Christmas golden banner thingies that you should leave up all year if you really want to go native.
We live in a relatively non-farang area and the local Macro store had at least six different heights of artificial trees, and a huge selection of lights. As a bonus they're pretty cheap too!

Re: Christmas Tree
We got a nice little artificial tree (1m30, I believe) together with some decorations (Balls, lights, santas, angels, reindeer, and a nice tree-topper gold star) all in for +-1250 at Makro. Put it up last weekend with Mini-me (3 and 1/2) and he was delighted to hang ornaments and see the lights lit.
We're also singing Christmas carols regularly (His favorite right now is Jingle Bells followed by Here Comes Santa Claus) to help him get into the spirit. We made a custom video for him on www.portablenorthpole.tv (It's free, and very high quality) and he asks to watch Santa every day (Pretty much several times a day every day)
