Of course lets not forget my 65th is a special event. Not only a birthday but a day when the state starts paying me back for all my labour for my hard earned income, albeit a paltry sum. Eligable for a bus pass and a coal allowance :D

The four of us made it in a tuk tuk. He revved up before ascending the hill and just about made it.

What about the bit down to the restaurant - I've often thought how dangerous that could be in a tuk tuk?

BB,
We're still alive and kicking. The same chap brought us back into town. His brakes had to be decent on the descent. I wouldn't have wanted the tuk tuk to run out of control there.

Elvis doing Puff the Magic Dragon?
What next, Matt Monro doing Hound Dog?

Elvis impersonator on duty. He does a really mean Puff the Magic Dragon.
Yes, OK I agree it was a little off the mainstream. It was so bad, it's one of my long lasting memories of that particular visit.

Believe me, it's not the norm

We didn't book, but I expect the weekends are busy. We were there on the Monday night of this long weekend and the place was quiet. It's huge, BTW.
Best to get a table right next to the cliff so you get the view of HH bay.
Edit: the grilled scallops were great, but extremely heavy on the garlic - that didn't bother us. We also had grouper which was excellent and praised by the Head Chef whose speciality, if any, is cooking fish. King prawns weren't bad either!!

Only been a couple of times but no need to book, but as Lomu said would be best to at weekends.
If you're taking visitors, like your daughters who you've mentioned are coming over soon Richard, it's well worthwhile getting there say half hour before dusk for the great views back into Hua Hin, have a few drinks first if that's a bit early. Once its dark it's not quite the same as the coastline is not that lit up until centre of town.

Another great place, already mentioned, with a stunning garden setting and tables right up to edge of sand, although you're raised up, is Supatra-by-the-Sea. You get perfect close up view of the giant Buddha statue lit up on the side of Takiab mountain. Foods usually great, medium price range like say Coco 51, and they do crispy aromatic duck with plum (hoisin?) sauce, no pancakes for rolling though.

Supatra-by-the-Sea
Couldn't agree more with SJ's comments about this place. It has become our restaurant of preference for special occasions.

We've only been to Supatra-by-the Sea once, but I was a tad disappointed. We were invited there (along with our other falang colleague) by the Dean at the university. I was really looking forward to it, but in the end it was a disappointment. Perhaps my hopes were built up to high? He'd booked the air-con room (of course), and when we arrived we all said that we'd prefer to eat outside. 'But it'll be too hot (at 7pm?) and there'll be alot of mosquitoes, etc.' We got our way - in the end. The staff seemed a bit miffed that plans had changed, but set up an outside table for us. For a restaurant of this standard I didn't expect the napkins to be a loo roll in a holder on the table, or to be presented with a pile of leaflets advertising houses for sale. The food was OK, but not great and the same can be said for the staff.

Maybe I do them an injustice. Perhaps our change of plan upset the apple cart. Whatever. Our experience didn't have us chomping at the bit to return...
