Not quite the Tsunami stuff - but on a very similar note.

Yonks ago when we bought the Honda brand new at the Honda Dealer in Petchaburi (HH was not open then).

The car was ready for the Tuesday morning at the showroom. 8)

Someone had been to 'See the monk' - and was advised that it would be unlucky to take delivery of the car anytime other than 09.00 on the Thursday. :cuss: (Strange that  - it was also the time that we were advised to have our second son delivered - 09.00 on a Thursday)

Anyway - I digress - back to the plot

We were also advised to drive out of the showroom in a Northerly direction - for extra good luck.

Thursday 08.50 arrived and all was ready - bank draft delivered, vehicle checked and all was ok.

SO

I drove out of the showroom turned right (NORTH) and proceeded to stop - facing a brick wall

What ARE you doing? says Mrs.T

EXACTLY AS YOU SAY - says I :?

Don't take the piss says Mrs.T
I'm NOT says I

Anyway - a few weeks later I received a phone call whilst working in Taiwan

'Darling - your car (It's always MINE when something is wrong) - I've hit a bollard whilst parking and there has been some minor damage'....................

So much for the Monk's good luck says I.............click

Mrs.T - who is normally an excellent driver - did not talk much for a week or two

But the Monk got changed - we now have a different one. :duck:

What can I say

and now my confession of guilt....

whilst looking at the house mentioned in the OP I noted that it was three floors high, and found myself thinking ahhh.... that would be good if a tsunami came....

then I started kicking myself mentally for being a headless chicken idiot ;-)

There was a minor quake in the area a few years ago. It woke me up in the middle of the night. Didn't last long nor did it cause any harm but was strong enough to shake the bed and shelves. I'm sure many of you remember it.

We experienced a quake in the end of September 2006.

Going back to the OP
sandman67 wrote:A few days ago I read, with my usual depression at human stupidity, about one of the shonky Thai fortune tellers in Samui spreading some rumour about an impending Tsunami, and that set all sorts of chaos in motion including a full on siren alert in Samui. How I chortled at the local authorities being made to look like prats......

Id usually file this into the mind bin had I not spent the last two nights listening to the bar girls chattering about it. Seems some are scared because the bars are so close to the seafront..... I laughed, then just shrugged it off as a poor education and a shame.....

Then the cherry on the cake.... now Mrs S is thinking twice about a house purchase as its near the beach and she doesnt want to get washed away by the supposed Tsunami (ignoring of course the fact that Thai fortune tellers are all a pack of lying snake oil salesmen).

Ive even tried sitting her down with Googy Earth and showing her the local plate tectonics and trying to explain that a tsunami sweeping up the gulf would be rare as rocking horse do do and improbable as Thaksin telling the truth. No hope..... no matter how carefully and simply I explain the science she still thinks the snake oil salesmen have the authority. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

so....

1) Has a tsunami ever hit this coast (even waaaaaay back when)...they do leave traces behind in the geological record.

2) Doesnt anyone in authority here ever take on these dimwit chicken gut fondlers and publicly rake them over the coals for spreading false information and scaring the cack out o people?

:banghead:  :banghead:
There is no doubt that no matter where you live on this Planet Earth (Sometimes compared to a shrinking Orange  ), sooner or later you can experience an earthquake. Also the main and common fault lines are well established - therefore being more likely locations.

However

With all the resources that science and men can muster - there is still no 100% foolproof method of PREDICTING one and hence maybe an ensuing Tsunami - yes even in Hua Hin. :o

What IS predictable are the continuing utterances from these bandaged soothsayers, fortune tellers and yes, sometimes monks, and the almost blind following of those who believe.

In this instance common sense and good scientific reasoning are about as useful as a 9 Baht note :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
