Yes, self-closers. Although gardeners & pool cleaners like to wedge them open and then sod off to lunch etc, hence the 'false-sense-of-security' comment I mentioned around the whole subject.ozuncle wrote:That wooden fence looks good but is certainly not good enough to qualify as a "pool fence"
It is very easy to climb over. Does it have self closing gates?
And yes, you're right OzUnc, the design 'style' we chose is climbable and a more secure style would be the better choice, but our main objective was to prevent him/any other kid from crawling or stumbling into it while still toddlers and too young to understand yet what'll happen if they step over the edge. We had a lot of lightweight tables, chairs, plastic climbing frames, ali steps, bicycles and the like around that a kid intent on climbing over, mischievously if you like, could do so without using the fence lattice work with our height of fence.
So an ultimate solution would also require something higher. Out of curiosity I just looked up some standards for minimum fence heights, and UK & Oz both say 1.2m, ours is 0.8m. I'm surprised it's only 1.2m, that's no safeguard against a couple of 3 year old's that drag a plastic garden table and chair up against the fence!?
When you got your own pool the best protection is to get them in there with water in their face as much as possible as babies, our boy never held back after that and seemed to progress naturally over and above any guidance he had. He seemed to be advancing from one week to the next, or so it appeared. He could be chucked in and thrash his way to the steps around two years old, swim a length by two-and-a-half, and dive off the jacuzzi at three...
And was surfing competitively at three-and-a-half....
