Episode 1 of A Perfect Planet is downloadable in HD here for those without iPlayer: https://www.ettvcentral.com/torrent/109 ... 65-mvgroup
For those that missed the original series, or that just want to watch it again, there is a nicely narrated recap of the journey by the man himself;

And it certainly wasn't a letdown - quite incredible photography and thoroughly enjoyable narration by the great man as usual.buksida wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 1:31 pm Episode 1 of A Perfect Planet is downloadable in HD here for those without iPlayer: https://www.ettvcentral.com/torrent/109 ... 65-mvgroup

Another thoroughly enjoyable series - I'd already seen the originals, but this was a great reminder. Also poignant in a way with regards to "Sahara" and his trip to Zouerat and pictures of the "SNIM Rail line" - very briefly shown, but somewhere I have visited on several occasions and worked for many months. Filmed around 20 years ago, it was not somewhere I thought I would be (and it hasn't changed!). I shall be downloading the full series (Sahara) if I can find....buksida wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 1:31 pm For those that missed the original series, or that just want to watch it again, there is a nicely narrated recap of the journey by the man himself;

Re: Documentaries
An old (very old) documentary on the life and career of Barnes Wallis. I'm not an engineer and haven't a scientific bone in my body, but I was brought up on tales about and from this man, who was an old boy and subsequent benefactor of my school.
We all know about the bouncing bomb of Dambusters fame, but there is so much more to his achievements, and probably so much wasted by various governments who thought they knew better. Well worth a look if you have a quiet 40 minutes.

Just binged this one. Four part documentary. Very good! Be warned, it can be fairly graphic in some parts.

Re: Documentaries
Have seen this one before amongst quite a few others - the man was a genius who didn't get the recognition he deserved... in some respects because he designed equipment and weapons of war not to mention the "Earthquake Bomb" or research into the "Spherical Bomb" which lead to some rather more horrific explosives.dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 10:57 pm An old (very old) documentary on the life and career of Barnes Wallis. Again, the "Lancaster Bomber" will have the "whatever" brigade burning their bras/Y-fronts/testicles or throwing their "FEMINIZER Pills" away in disgust

His designs certainly are still are a major part in current aviation - wait for a return of the "Airships".....

Re: Documentaries
Most of what is on Netflix is a few years old, but for documentaries, this doesn't matter. Two I've been watching recently that were worth a revisit are:
The Mekong River with Sue Perkins - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4267002/
She initially grates on the nerves but you warm to her as the series goes on. It was aired in 2014 so the damage that those Chinese dams have done now must be unimaginable.
Joanna Lumley's Silk Road Adventure - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9549930/
Just makes me miss travelling all the more.

Re: Documentaries
If you like real music from the 70's
Laurel Canyon (2020) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11017950/? ... _sr_srsg_3
Two part documentary about some of music's most important pioneers. Not as good as my favourite The Last Waltz, but still interesting.

Watched this last night and was totally engrossed. If you want to know how US politics ended up like it is today look no further than "Get Me Roger Stone" (2017). Stone moulded Trump in his own image.

Re: Documentaries
Have to say I've truly enjoyed many travel documentaries with Simon Reeve - The Indian Ocean being one of my favourites. A likeable presenter and I can relate to many of the countries/areas he's visited.
With all the issues caused by the Covid pandemic, his latest series "Incredible Journeys" just started on the BBC looks back on his travels and the people he's met over the past 15 years. If the first episode is anything to go by, this will be a series well worth watching.

Re: Documentaries
Likewise mate, have been binging on the travel docos since this year will probably be the first in memory that I won't be able to take a road trip somewhere. The heavy political or serial killer stuff doesn't do much for me.
There are two separate ones on Japan on Netflix at the moment (which would have been our destination this year) with Sue Perkins and Joanna Lumley who also did a Trans-Siberian Express trip. Will look for Simon Reeve, enjoyed his previous stuff.
Armchair travelling in 2021 is what we're stuck with
Edit: Reeve has done a lot! https://eztv.re/search/simon-reeve

Re: Documentaries
Indeed he has, but must admit there was a couple on your list that I wasn't aware of and will certainly take a look at, so thanks for the heads up!buksida wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 7:33 am Edit: Reeve has done a lot! https://eztv.re/search/simon-reeve

He's also written several books, only one of which I've read - "Step By Step". It's a mix of his life/upbringing and travels, both of which I relate to in certain levels/experiences. Perhaps this is why I like the guy and his programs etc! It's well worth a read....

^^If he's the guy I'm thinking of, I've been put off in the past by his boyish enthusiasm and therefore haven't seen much of his stuff, maybe I'll give him a second chance...

Re: Documentaries
He'll certainly be "boyish" to you DM with him being under 50 (just)! But that can be a good thing -unless of course you're looking towards getting that white suit out of the cupboard [EDIT] Wardrobe??!! Dance away.....dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 12:20 am ^^If he's the guy I'm thinking of, I've been put off in the past by his boyish enthusiasm and therefore haven't seen much of his stuff, maybe I'll give him a second chance...

Seriously, you should have another look - he's visited some wonderful places and to me, comes across very well. Why not be enthusiastic when travelling the world? 2020 was the first year in 50 that I have not taken a flight, a bus or a train, and I'm not holding out much hope for 2021.
Big thanks to the Chinese government and their ilk

[EDIT] Seriously have a look at "The Indian Ocean" superb!

Re: Documentaries
If you are put off by 'boyish exuberance', take a look at any of Steve Irwin's videos. He showed what 'boyish exuberance' is all about. I doubt he lost any of his followers because of it.

Re: Documentaries
^ Steve Irwin? I wouldn't say "boyish", more so pillock. Sorry, couldn't stand the guy. He didn't do the "Travel Show" either, so missing the point slightly.
