Re: TV series worth watching/downloading
I just started listening to the first episode of series 80 and whilst I couldn’t say that it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard, it definitely is funny (maybe more for us oldies than twitter age fans) and worth a listen if you’re at a loose end - I couldn’t find an obvious way of listening to pre-series 80 programmes - any ideas?
Edit. Obviously there’s an option to pick up quite a few back-series on YouTube!!

It's the way I get everything except obvs live sports and PPTV. In the last century I was a heavyweight Usenet (NNTP) poster for a few years, upping 0 day (day of the group release) warez for the poor masses. I'm well beyond the timelimit for prosecution now!Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 30, 2023 8:42 pmI gave up doing downloads a few years ago - I always seemed to have problems and now just can’t be bothered!!dtaai-maai wrote:You can downlod season 1 from Pirate Bay. Edit - except I don’t have access to Netflix!!

Torrenting is comparative child's play, and I rarely find a dud file which is simple to replace anyway, if you could use help just PM me.

Re: TV series worth watching/downloading
Thanks for the offer but I’ll probably not bother as this old dinosaur can just about manage using a VPN to access just about enough to watch from the mainstream UK channels and Amazon Prime. I remember getting inundated with very dubious (scam) emails after using (I think) Pirate Bay, so I’m reluctant to try again even though others seem to manage without issue!! Likewise, downloading is a piece of cake and where 99% of my viewing material comes from. I can't be arsed with the hassle (and security risks) of those "free" streaming sites, or any of the subscriptions, and I can rarely get the UK channels to stream live sports without buffering.404cameljockey wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 9:52 am Torrenting is comparative child's play, and I rarely find a dud file which is simple to replace anyway, if you could use help just PM me.
We could put together a "torrenting for dummies" guide but it probably breaks one of Thailand's silly laws.

Re: TV series worth watching/downloading
Not something for everyone, but 'Shtisel' on Netflix. I just watched the first series. Subtitled of course.
A multi-generational Jewish Haredi family (not harshly religiously fundamentalist and not Zionist) living in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Jerusalem reckons with love, loss and the doldrums of daily life. I suppose it's a soap opera but not in the American style, it's realism with a fair bit of subtle humour (the writing does poke fun occasionally at the 'how much?' financial mentality of some of the characters, it's honest). It does touch sometimes on the conflict between orthodox and non-orthodox Jewish people, but that's far from the main focus.
Personally I wanted to watch because although I have second-generation Jewish 'westernised' friends, but the only two Israeli-born 'westernised' people I have ever met through business really were not nice people. So I looked for some better perspective. I'm glad I watched and actually thoroughly enjoyed the series.
The similarity between the Jewish 'shalom aleichem' and the Arabic 'a'salaam aleikum' made me think about the roots of brotherhood pre-dating Islam's schism from the Hebrew people. Never to be fixed, I guess.
A really nice show, and made me thoughtful too.

Re: TV series worth watching/downloading
The Burning Girls - British TV murder/mystery series. There's a distinctive supernatural overtone based on ancient terrible deeds impacting on present times, but that's not the general tone.
Edit: I wrote this review while watching the whole series in one sitting. Read on.
The supernatural events which you clearly are shown happening as real, not imagined or dreamed, are completely ignored after the fourth episode. This is TV writing of a quality for a suboptimal audience.
You can watch it as a good murder mystery if you want, which it is in general, there's a lot of substance, but this plot wrangling is just blatant and unforgivable audience manipulation. And the final episode is a rushed sewing up of the whole plot. In the end; colour me disappointed.
So rather than a full recommendation, this includes a quite large caveat.
I'm 100 percent sure the book it's based on is better fare. I have it on my Kindle and will certainly read it.

I'd been looking at this one, but after your review it may well be put on the Back Burner... There's a stack of stuff still to watch!404cameljockey wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 8:15 pm The Burning Girls - British TV murder/mystery series.

Re: TV series worth watching/downloading
I forgot that earlier this year I watched the Netflix series 'Beef'. Very funny.
Steven Yeun and Ali Wong star as two LA residents on the edge – he a down-on-his-luck handyman, she a chi-chi business owner on the cusp of midlife crisis – who are thrown together by a road rage incident. There begins a cat-and-mouse game of one-upmanship revenge, which morphs into something subtler, stranger and more affecting.

Two programmes that I’ve been recently watching on BBC, the first called “The Met”, which unsurprisingly is about the Metropolitan Police in London, and the second “The Dectives” which is a 3-part programme about taking down an Orgainsed Crime Group (OCG) based in the Greater Manchester area. Both are about real-life events and show how tenacious the police have to be in trying to track and convict criminals - they’re both good, but IMO, The Detectives is first rate and recommended.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves
A Paramount+ series that can be downloaded from PB and eztv.
8 episodes based on the true(-ish) story of the first black US marshall. Shades of Django, inasmuch as he's a slave turned lawman, though I suspect the movie borrowed from the story of Reeves rather than the other way round.

The Continental
Just finished this three-part mini-series based on the hotel for assassins in the John Wick world. If you liked JW, you'll like this, lots of guns, kung fu, and a great 70s setting and soundtrack.

Yes, not the sort of thing I usually watch at all, more my son's style but thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite funny at times too, I thought Mel Gibson would not be a baddie worth watching but he hams it up nicely. Suspend belief and prepare to be entertained.buksida wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 10:06 am The Continental
