In the west we have efficient and effective policing that is professional and clean. Corruption is a small percentage, and 99% of the time they get caught and prosecuted.

my favorite news madness....they did a survey of traffic cops in Bangkok and found over 25% of them didnt even know BASIC traffic laws and had received one week of training in police procedure. Over 75% didnt know the rules concerning the different types of central line marking used in Thailand.
Or perhaps the latest in the Saudi gem scandal - seems the head of the investigation and his DSI copper chums kidnapped and murdered the wife and daughter of one suspect in an attempt to get him to talk. Note that Thailand touts the DSI as their equivalent of the FBI.

I think in any country that you have a vast amount of poverty, this is going to happen ,I think it's worse in the PI. Lots of "set up" crimes. underage girls that are really 22-23 years old, drug set ups. and the like.
not much you can do about it.

Sandman I could not agree with you more, in fact I have just forwarded your comments to a Thai police officer friend of mine and challenged him to identify the poster, photo, passport number etc to prove me wrong. So lets wait and see

I agree with you that the Thai police are a bunch of corrupt, clueless and lazy theives.
But i do not agree with you that corrupt police are only a small percentage in the west and i don't think corrupt police in the west get caught and prosecuted 99% of the time.
Obviously there is a degree of corruption in Western police forces, but in my experience you won't be paying out bribes in the West if you're a normal law abiding citizen in the same manner as you will be expected to in SE Asia.
I've been stopped by the police many times in the region for completely fabricated traffic offences, more so in Indonesia than Thailand, a thing that has never happened to me in the West.
I have yet to experience corruption in the Thai police force.
But if corruption prevails as described above it compares more to a pyramid-type operation like Amway, Holiday Magic, Tupperware, et al, where you buy the right to move up in the system, than to that of any western police force. The exception perhaps being the Balkans and Russia which are not really western countries anyways.
Please note that I did not, repeat not, mention Italy at all.

I agree with you that the Thai police are a bunch of corrupt, clueless and lazy theives.
