Thaiwonderland : free water, electricity, buses, trains and tax free diesel… for 6 months

Published 16 July 2008 Economy , Oil / Energy

The sinking Samak government has decided a… rescue package, to help low income households and… businesses.

-The government will pay water bills for low-income households that consume fewer than 50 m3 liters each month.

-It will do likewise for households that consume fewer than 80 units of electricity a month. For those using up to 150 units a month, the government will pay half.

-The government decided not to remove subsidies on household cooking gas. It says prices will remain at today’s level.

-free public transport on non air-conditioned buses. In all, the poor can ride about 800 buses plying the capital’s streets for free.
The state will reimburse the bus companies. It expects the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority to shoulder losses of Bt1.4 billion.

-Third-class train seats to all destinations will be paid for by the state.

And last but not least… massive diesel subsidy.

-The excise taxes for gasohol and other biofuels will be cut by Bt3.30 per litre to almost zero. The tax for diesel, which is widely used in the transport sector, will also be cut by Bt2.30 per litre. The tax for biodiesel will also see a similar cut. (source Nation, Bangkok Post)

Total cost of this new thai folie : around 47 billions THB for 6 months.

9,5 millions of low income households will benefit from thoses decisions. But, that’s not really the point.

On the 47 billions THB, the bulk will be spent on the tax free diesel (biofuels are for the moment virtual in term of use).

I'm exerting way too much energy trying to convince everyone about this. I'm just happy to spend the 900 baht I've saved over the last two billing cycles, and the approximate additional 1,600 baht I'll save over the next four cycles. Good luck. :thumb: I hope you do find the answer and eventuallynget what's owed to you. Pete

Yesterday whilst playing 2 fat ladies and legs eleven the electric meter reader arrived at the tin shacks.
He read the meters and handed out the bills.
The game stopped and a fast and furious debate ensued between the women and apparently it goes as follows
lady1 .. had a bill for 178 Bht reduced to 100 Bht
lady2 .. had a bill for 235 Bht reduced to 200 Bht
lady3 .. had a bill for 305 Bht NO reduction (she was pissed to say the least hence the furious debate)
Still NO news on water bills though maybe i am not asking the correct questions

Sent the wife down to the water company to appeal the b2600+ bill we got and she called me from there to ask me turn off any water that was running and look at the meter. It was not moving, so apparently no leak. Then she asked for the current numbers on the meter and I gave them to her.

She came home later that day and told me they basically said "tough s..t. Pay or we'll turn off your water."

This is the second time this has happened to me in two years in the current house. My bill will go along between b150 and b300 for months and all of a sudden we get one for over b2000!

I'm wondering if they estimate and only read the meter once a year and catch up on any error at that time?!? :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

Old thread I know, but what is the unit rate (per m3 or 1000 litres) for government supplied water in HH/Cha Am?

Thanks in advance.

Can be anywhere between 4 Baht up to about 12+ Baht on a sliding scale depending on consumption. The more you use the more you pay.
There is a monthly free allowance of units applicable at present

It depends also on the village, if you pay to the project company.
I paid for 1000 liters:

20 Baht in Hua Hin (Tippawan)

5 Baht for the first 30 m3, 7 Baht for the rest in Sam Roi Yod

120 Baht per m3 plus 12000 Baht/year in Switzerland !!

As an update, the government subsidy of water bills will come to an end nation wide at the end of March. Under the present scheme here on my side, usage under 30,000 cubic meters monthly has been free. Pete

30,000 m3 cannot be possible, you must mean 30 m3 right?
