Premierleague 08-09
I heard the end of something on CNN that Queen's Park Rangers is being bought by some very rich group of people? Said more money between them than any owner(s) of any other club. Perhaps making a bid to get them back into the Premier League. I think it said they have been out of it since 1996? Pete

They then sold a 20% stake to the family of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal (Worlds 4th richest man) in December last year.
So yes, they have some serious cash.
They only got linked with Zidane and Figo over the summer though.

Crappy little club with an even more annoying tiny stadium. Anyone remember their plastic pitch? I used to watch Chelsea there when we were crap and they were goodish. I once left the ground and in one of their exit 'tunnels' probably didn't touch the ground for its entire length - just carried along with the crowd. I was dreading someone falling over...
The best thing is that its now a landmark for probably the best Thai restaurant in London, if you can find it hidden behind all the burkha's worn by the locals, that is!!!

Talk is cheap
I was baffled last night when turning to the BBC at about 2300 hours and seeing a football report. They had things like the Coca-Cola league, the Blue Square league etc. I couldn't keep up with it...LOL. Is there a city in the UK that doesn't have a football club.

I see Gerrard is out for 10-15 days. You guys tell me, is that going to be crucial to Liverpool's performance over the next few weeks? Pete

He should only miss the Aston Villa game this weekend because its the International break next week.prcscct wrote:I see Gerrard is out for 10-15 days. You guys tell me, is that going to be crucial to Liverpool's performance over the next few weeks? Pete
He should be back for the Man Utd game in 2 weeks.
Not that Liverpool have put on a good performance yet this season but hopefully things should improve now Mascherano and Babel are back from the Olympics.

Think his absence will hurt the national team more than Liverpool. I think England are playing twice during his recovery period?
Just checked. The above is correct:

I'm confused again Lomu. Isn't Liverpool in the Champions League also? This is not the same as the England national team, right? Pete

Pete, the Champions League is a competition played amongst the top European Teams ie Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal (England)
Real Madrid and Barcelona (Spain) Inter Milan and Roma (Italy) Bayern Munich (Germany) etc etc
The bigger leagues such as the English, Spanish and Italian ones are given upto 4 places each. 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th in their respective leagues qualify for the Champions League.
Turkey, Holland, Switzerland etc etc get less and less places depending on the quality of their league.
The Champion League is played Midweek during the Domestic league.
For instance Liverpool could play Chelsea on Saturday, go to Italy to play Milan on the Wednesday and come back and play Newcastle the following Saturday
International Football is a completely seperate competition.
All the European leagues stop so their players can go and play for their countrys.
Obviously you have to be English to play for England but Club Teams buy players and can consist of any Nationality.

Just one further thought then, if a player lets say is on a Premier League team, which is also in the Champions League, and the man is also on the National Team....at what point during the season does he fall down and die?
Talk about a schedule from hell! His performance has to suffer after weeks and weeks of that. Pete

This is why the bigger (richer) domestic teams have larger squads so they can chop and change.prcscct wrote:Just one further thought then, if a player lets say is on a Premier League team, which is also in the Champions League, and the man is also on the National Team....at what point during the season does he fall down and die?

The upcoming International games are Qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.
These Qualifying games are actually few and far between.
Obviously the actual World Cups and European Championship (as you saw in June) take place when the Domestic leagues have finished.
Is there a squad limit as dictated by FIFA or someone? I believe all the pro American teams in all teams sports have a limit on the quantity of men they can suit up and put on the bench. The others have to be sent down to a 'taxi' squad so to speak until they are called up to replace someone. Pete
