Thought Oragutans came from Indonesia?
There are protected colonies in Malaysia and Indonesia - I visited the latter in Sumatra (I think there are two separate ones there) in a place called Bukit Lawang - I would highly recommend going there and generally to Sumatra, as long as you can put up with the call to prayer every 4 hours, as in the towns and cities all the accommodation tends to be right next to the mosque!
Lake Toba in the centre of Sumatra is a wonderful place to chill out, but another of my highlights will sadly not be the same now - Banda Aceh in the far north, as it was wiped out in the tsunami, although amazingly the little island I spent most of my time on, Pulau Weh was apparently spared. Indonesia is not everybody's cup of tea because of the hair raising driving (knocks Thailand into a cocked hat!) and the 'in your face' way they can be with foreigners and trying to sell you something, but Aceh was nothing like that. They were friendly but a little wary as they didn't get many tourists, plus of course that is a very strong Muslim area.
I was lucky that I met a lovely girl at the tourist office there who was eager to take me round - fortunately she moved away from the area before the tsunami and became an air hostess, but I lost contact with her around the time of it and fear that she and her family may have perished because it was likely that she would have been visiting them at that time of year (Ramadan).
Anyway I am sure a visit to Sumatra would be worthwhile for all the well travelled peeps on here.
