Flags outside the Palace

Post by JD »

Many UK Union Jacks flying outside the Palace and along Petchkasem Road when I went past this morning.

Anybody know who is visiting the Palace today?

After the recent troubles outside the British Embassy in Bangkok, I can understand any news blackout for visiting VIP's.

I know Prince Andrew postponed his visit a few months ago, maybe he has rescheduled.

The Palace only fly the flags of other countries when it is either a Royal Visitor or a Head of State visit. I don't think Ambassadors get the flag treatment.

I got stuck in traffic yesterday downtown as the MIB blocked off all side roads and stopped traffic in both directions to let a VIP motorcade pass.

I don't know who was in it but there were several luxury cars and vans... but it came from the South (not from the direction of Bangkok).

I'm in Bangkok just now and yesterday saw big sign welcoming Princess Alexandra to Thailand.

Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy (Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel; born 25 December 1936), is a member of the British Royal Family, the youngest granddaughter of King George V and Queen Mary. She was married to the late Sir Angus Ogilvy. Prior to her marriage she was known as Princess Alexandra of Kent. She is known in the family as Alex. She was the first Princess to be styled Princess of Kent since Queen Victoria held the title as a princess before she ascended the throne.

Princess Alexandra carries out royal duties on behalf of her cousin, The Queen. She is 33rd in the line of succession to the British throne; at the time of her birth in 1936, she was sixth.

Union Jacks

I saw them putting up Union Jacks along Petchkasem this morning.

Thanks Ken for the background info on Princess Alexandra. She must be coming down, perhaps by plane, to see the king.

Yesterday afternoon, HHfarang, that was most likely the youngest daughter of our (Thai) king heading for a stay at the Hilton. I was there when she arrived. .her third visit in the last few weeks. ( There is always a fire truck and an ambulance parked near the Hilton bar and they take over much of the parking lot.)

Had dinner with some friends at Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok last night. They have just sent me a text to say that Princess Alexandra has just moved in there tonight.

Yes, when I paid my hideous tax bill last year I clearly remember stating that the 33rd in line to the throne should get a stay at the Mandarin Oriental with my compliments!!

Makes sense for one of the UK Royals to be attending for 11th Nov services, as its actually the 90th anniversary this year. I wonder if the Princess might also stay on as UK royal rep to this weeks funeral rights. That way us taxpayers get 2 for the price of one.

I don't really begrudge her the trip, she doesn't seem to get out much these days!

She's one of those quiet Royals that just get's on with things. She's getting on now, so I doubt she does too many 'Royal' engagements. But she is well known locally in the area where I live and I believe still lives in the house in Richmond Park - quite unique really.

She seems to have a number of contacts with the Thai Royal family.

I went to a concert at Cadogan Hall last year, the London Philharmonic were playing some of the music composed by his Majesty.

Princess Alexandra was there with the ex first wife of the Crown Prince (can't rememember her name). I nearly bumped into her (literally), during the interval I stepped back to let someone pass me and she was stood right behind me. Pleased to say I didn't step on her toes!

It was quite a good do - 'Thai food & Beverages' who were a sponser were generous with their catering of the event.
