Does your Thai family support PAD?

Post by ozuncle »

I admit I know very little about the current political crisis and reading the recent posting on this and other forums, I get the impression that the majority are absolutely anti Taksin. Does that mean they are pro PAD?

My Thai family who are from Bangkok and are certainly not the rich elite are quite vocal in there desire for Mr. T to return.
They can not believe that the PAD have been able to cause all this trouble.

What do your families think?

whatever the village headman tells them to

my thai family live in a 20 shack village out in the deep boonies past Roi Et....political awareness comes via the headmans speaker system.

One time when up there I tried to engage in a conversation about Taxsin....pointless....he and his machinery did a superb con job on them all....

they see a great man....

I see a thief who gave them crappy roads, irregular power and water supplies, no hospitals or schools anywhere nearby, and them still in a debt cycle......

they see a great man.

there y go.....[/quote]

Same story here except 20 shacks near Nakhon Sawan.
My wife has been watching the tube for three days watching the PAD speeches and is now a PAD supporter.

Yes miked,
But what does your Thai family think?

I guess that about half the people in Thailand want to see T behind bars and the other half see him as a hero who will save Thailand.

Well I know mine don't. While they're not avid supporters of Mr T, they certainly have a point when they say he caused less harm than the airport thugs.

Wife and her lot say North still likes Thaksin and want him back because he assists the poor there (whether to gain votes or not irrelevant to them), 30 Baht healthcare etc. Wife laughed when I suggested they vote for the 100 Baht, she said they spend more than that getting back there to vote, I think bit of a red herring that one vote wise, relevant legal wise.
They don't care about his financial wrongdoings as they say all politicians are the same.

They say Bangkok and South generally support PAD, who favour the rich and do less for the poor.

It doesn't really matter whether all this is right or wrong, it's their perception and subsequent vote that matters.
No matter what we think, I don't think there's much doubt the North love Thaksin.

The Mrs was an ardent PAD supporter because she knew some of the top people and considered them good people however now she is seeing the damage they are doing to the country and is changing her stance.

PAD is cutting its own throat

My grandma here (aka landlady and shop owner) was an avid supporter of the PAD. Her TV was tuned in 24/7, and every day her sofa was packed with other folk from the village watching it and cheering.

Tonight I went to the shop and the TV wasn't on. I asked her why and she said that she was 'beuar' (bored in Thai) and she didn't think that going to the airport was a good move. She asked me if it was all over! With a kind of wishfull look. She's had enough. We've all had enough. Neither of us want to see the whole episode turn into a gunfight and a bloody end. They've lost the support of our small little village - I don't think that we're alone.

I think you're right. Even Thais I know who were with PAD in the beginning are changing their minds now because they are beginning to realize the financial damage that is being done to the country by the third day of closing the main airport in a country this size. Swampy is a hub in the area so it's not only hurting Thailand but it's messing with the flight schedules all over Asia, stranding flights and people everywhere.

Unfortunately this poll will get a very northern biased view. It seems from other posts that most people on this forum have wives and girlfriends from Isan. For whatever reasons, Thaksin is still revered by some and PAD are disliked.

All my family are avid PAD supporters. All the locals here in BS are PAD supporters except for the few that have come down from the North for work.

I cannot agree that the Democrats (the party, not PAD) take care of the better off and Thaksin took care of the poor. The Thaksin era was a time of worldwide prosperity. Anybody could have given a few Baht to the poor.

The fact is that Thaksin is a convicted crook. Anybody that continues to support him or his family and cronies must therefore condone his activities.

Sorry to make such and extreme example but Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and Pol Pot made vast improvements for their supporters but look at the cost for the majority.

Support for PAD, that's another issue. They get support because they are opposed to Thaksin. My guess is that they don't have a great deal of support as a political party in their own right. Hopefully they will never become one.

Don't know answer but the North believe it and its their vote that matters at end of day.

If the family are anti-law breakers like Thaksin, why do they condone other law-breakers. Yet to be convicted is not an acceptable excuse for me, they've seen them breaking the law with their own eyes etc.

Not aimed at your family Guess, mine's same, but many people seem to condone this law breaking in the name of Thaksin's law-breaking. It's a bit hypocritical to me.

In my partners village they are ardent PPP supporters on a local level but they had pretty much written off Thaksin by now.
I can see now that if this goes on much longer there could be a backlash where they could start thinking that Thaksin coming back would be a good idea.
When it comes to the PAD, one thing that is very evident is that they absolutely hate Chamlong and every time he appears on TV people get visibly angry and hurl abuse (and other things) at him.
Apparently he is blamed for having a part in the 1976 student massacre and is just seen as an old trouble-maker who has no part in today’s politics.

I could not agree more.

When I ask my father in-law, a local from Huay Sai Tai (born and raised) hes response is "Bangkok politics".

My brother in-law has many friends in Naresuan Police/Army (from north and local) and their response is full support of Thaksin and PPP and the Issan community.

I think the PPP has much support in the lower ranks of the army and police.

But, my Thai family, I don't think they really care and are over it all. Though they would like to see the back of Thaksin and his influence.
