U-Tapao

Post by PeteC »

Thought some of you may be interested in seeing what it looked liked 40 years ago. Galary photos at bottom. Pete

....and here are some of Pattaya back then. The major points being the pristine water and that not much was there.

See the left tab bar onabove site and you'll find some old photos of Bangkok, Korat and other places.

Very interesting, Pete. What an amazing effort and expense that must have been put into U-Tapao Air Base. It was truly a self contained city with every conceivable facility, plus some others not mentioned!

Is that a U-2 I see sneaking off there in a couple of photo`s?

The second link also interests me as it has some reference to the base at Ubon. I have read somewhere that there is very little of it remaining now.
My late Thai wife was there as a young girl, as her Mother had some type of restaurant, either on the Base, or just outside, I cannot remember now.

Thanks Pete.

I loved the photos of old Pattaya :D

The beach looks a lot more inviting back then (and cleaner).

Yes, U-2's were based there. We were also visited by SR-71's from time to time but only when they had problems and couldn't get back to Okinawa or Japan. That bird still holds the speed record and it's top speed is still classified even though they have all been retired, except one which I think NASA uses. A site to see when it takes off, 45 degrees then gone like a UFO, no joking. They took off with fuel tanks almost empty and got refueled immediately at altitide by a KC-135.

Yes, again. Ubon as well as NKP further north have lost all or most military significance to the Thai's now. They are now nothing but small commercial airports with a few 'ghost' buildings scattered about that make visitors scratch their heads wondering what they were.

By browsing those two sites, you guys now know more about that era here than the vast majority of Thai's under the age of 45, as they have never taught it in school, or even talked about it in detail. In essence "we weren't here and we didn't build anything". LOL. Pete

Impressive pictures Pete, America must have spent some money on that base because it looks just the same as the ones I visited in the US during the eighties!

Wasn't Don Meung used as a US base as well?

Already mentioned are U Tapao, and Ubon was there another at Udon Thani?

Sattahip changed just a bit as well from the photos!

Yes, also Korat(Wing 1). Sattahip is a nice place, clean, quiet, pristine etc but I think it's that way because the Thai Navy pretty much own that entire part of Thailand and won't even consider letting anything change too much, big naval acadamy there too. I went down there a had a good look around and it's lovely, especially in the bay where they keep the navy ships.

Don Meung wasn't a combat launching base but used for cargo, personnel movements, as well as general commercial traffic both Thai and foreign. Spitfire mentions Korat. Udon Thani was/is known as Udorn. There was also Takhli and NKP (Nakon Phanom). Little known is that there was also a US Marine airbase 15 miles northeast of Khon Kaen named Nam Phong. This was also used as an emergency landing airfield by all services when needed. Below is more reference. Pete
