Thai Food and Wine?

Post by PeteC »

Inspired from another thread.

Has anyone found that wine goes well with any Thai food? I haven't. To me wine and spicy food just don't mix well. A cold beer or water seems to be best. I would say the same thing for all the curry and native food I've had in Malaysia and Singapore as well. Pete

Thai Food and Wine

Post by margaretcarnes »

The celebrity Chinese chef Ken Hom says it is nonsense that you can't drink wine with Chinese food.
I'd second that for Thai food and all curries, including Indian. I like a red with Indian curries, and have both red and white wines with Thai and Chinese food.
Maybe the problem is that 'house' wines sold in restaurants are pretty bog standard middle of the road. There are fruity light or spicy citrus whites around, and heavy spicy reds, both of which should complement Asian food.
Still nothing to go with a balti though eh?

Try sauvignon blanc, it's more refreshing than drier white wines...suiting this hot tropical climate, and not sweet either.

Pinot Noir is okay with spicey foods also, however I personally prefer to drink merlot here.

A good red goes with anything, including another good red. :naughty:

I love wine with food but can't eat chili, so cannot comment on that side.

All the non spicy food I ate in Thailand went well with wine.

Pete,

I agree with you 100%. I don't like wine with Thai food and I've tried many different types. Typically, I just drink water or the occasional beer with it just like you mentioned.... and I've always been a wine drinker, especially with food. I can't even think about eating pasta or a steak without a good red wine or a western style seafood dish or a main dish salad without a good white.

Shiraz is by far my favorite. Spicy Thai food and a sahrp Shiraz is an assault on the taste buds. Unfortunately, I can't get into any wine in Thailand--just too hot for wine. Maybe if I turned the air-con in the house to max it would work; but for right now this is a USA treat.

Well I've tried a light white wine with Tomm Kha Gai and it fitted pretty well. A Moet Chandon would do it.

I don't think Wine goes with Thai food either - Water or beer is Good.

If you are fancing a Gastro evening order some thing Good but simple and enjoy a Glass of Wine with it.

A good fresh fried or grilled fish - or for something different go to Khao Takiab - just the shacks that the fishermen own, you can buy a Kilo of Prawns and maybe some scallops, they cook 'em for you on the charcoal and bring you own Wine

Well... As we use to say in France, tastes and colors... :)

I do not totally agree with you... A light red wine, without much tannin and slightly cooled, goes with Thai food. Anyway, do it in the way you like it...

Every one has different tastes and wines taste different to most people.

I agree with you "do it in the way you like it"
Beer, wine, cola, water, what the hell, different strokes for different folks.

If it's going in my mouth I will decide what tastes best.

It used to be red with meat, white with fish etc, not any more, as people realise they should follow their pallet not convention.

Edit for typo.

For me Thai food overwhelms wine. I much prefer beer, fizzy water or fruit juice.

That's the reason why I said a light cooled red wine without tannin...

I'm with you on that BaaBaa; all the places that I've found that sell really good Thai food tend to sell Chang rather than a choice of wines!

Well if the Thais know what goes best with their food it's Chang, Archa, or Lao Khao for Poochai and a humble water for Pooying.
