The Nation Mar 26 2009
Interior Minister Chavarat Chanweerakul on Thursday said the situation was worrisome after he had received a report estimating the red-shirt crowd to have surged to about 30,000.
Chavarat said he could not predict how long the protest at Government House would last.
He also stated that police were closely monitor the rally activities after the red shirts threatened to spread out the protests to key government installations, including Suvarnabhumi Airport.

If only more Thais saw things the same as you US! (not that they'd be able to do much about it). It just shows that not one of these 'politicians' or protesters actually gives a toss about their country. The understudy wrote: "Thailand - A State fulla Kids in a Kindergarden

I am confused this unelected present government that got to be the govt because of the PAD/ Yellow shirts are surprised that the red shirts would play the same fire with fire i am stunned
As for Thaksin why should he go away when he still commands the majority of Thai voters
And just as an aside when is 2,000 baht payments to a selected few a fiscal stimulus and NOT vote buying
just a few questions which i am sure will be ignored

Your confusion will remain sarge until you grasp the fact that no government here has been fairly elected because democracy does not exist in this country.
Thaksin should go away because he is a thief who has damaged and divided a country which once stood together, he is the root cause of all of this turmoil and if it wasn't for his sheer blatant greed none of this would be happening.
Yes, the government payouts are a form of vote buying but what else can you do with a majority population who haven't finished high school. Until the education system gets fixed this practise will continue, at least this administration is making some effort at addressing the education problems in Thailand.

as long as you cannot see the hypocricy of bitching and complaining about TRT and Mr T using their OWN money buying votes at 100Bt a go and then justifying the other side with quote"Yes, the government payouts are a form of vote buying" when its using GOVT money to buy a specific section of the population and guess what
it isnt the poor
rice farmers
street sellers
farm labourors
or anybody else that would even vaguely NOT vote PAD

I never stated I was confused sarge, read the words, I also never justified the current governments actions, read the words again out loud.
Your definition of 'poor' is also quite bizarre as the 'payouts' have gone to minimum wage earners - I would define them as poor regardless of their 'occupations'. It also doesn't matter what province they are from, this has been country-wide action, unlike the policies of the previous administration.
I do not support PAD or the govt but hasn't it been nice, quiet and almost 'stable' over the past few months?

This 2,000 Bt handout is only going to salaried workers and that is a total of 5.5 million what happened to the other 55 million oh and building workers side street vendors rice farmers farm labourors and the POOR are NOT salaried
As for education with yours you should be able to work out WHO and WHO is NOT getting this nationwide (har dee har har ) handout 80% of salaried staff are from Bangkok and towns like Hua Hin not in rice farm areas
Quote"Yes, the government payouts are a form of vote buying but what else can you do

Sarge & Buksi,
To throw my 2 cents in, regarding vote buying/government handouts.
The Labor Government here in Australia are about to start handing out $900 to all Australians who earned less than $80k AU last financial year.
This is a hell of a lot more than 2000 baht, and has very divided opinions.
One side says this is vote buying and there is no proof that this will stimulate the economy, in fact the same government gave $1000 AU to those on welfare.
The other side (mainly the working & middle class) believe it is very much essential and will stimulate the economy to help keep it out of recession.
The current trend in the west recently has been to spend, spend, spend and it looks like Thailand may be trying to follow.
I personally do not agree with giving out money to the poor as it will be squandered usually, but rather give it to small business to help to create jobs. I also don't think it is fair to quickly judge this handout in Thailand of 2000 baht as being vote buying, because there is an easier, cheaper method and in my opinion Abhisit Vejjajiva is just following the Western nations steps to avoid further financial problems.

On the subject of hand-outs, I'm up in Issan at the moment and they could do with some up here.
The government have pulled out of price guarantees on some produce which has basically left many farmers with nothing after a years work.
There have already been some protests in this area with farmers blocking roads and dumping produce.
This would make it very easy for anyone intent on trouble to recruit supporters.

Last December the Aus government gave a one off $1000 gift for every dependent child. This April there is a one off $900 gift to taxpayers under a certain threshold. All in the name of economic stimulus.
So a husband a wife with three kids could get one off gifts from the government in 5 months totalling $4,800. Not bad. But is this vote buying? Baht 2,000 is, even allowing for differences in national income, a lot different to AUD$4,900. Given the rate at which the Aus economy is heading south, and with an election due in 2 years, why is it not vote buying? If it is, then is Aus not democratic? What is the difference with Thailand?

the reason that the cheques go to salaried worker and not street vendors is that they dont pay tax....simple. same reason Mrs S wont get a cheque....she doesnt exist as far as the Finance ministry is concerned. Never pay tax, never vote....som nam na.
You NEVER vote for the prime minister directly...so that shoots down the unelected prime minister argument.
One leader taking over from another without elections? Hmm....lets see....J Major, G Brown, H Truman, L B Johnson, G Ford......those names ring any bells?
As for the unelected government argument....again wrong. There was an election and he Democrats came in second after PPP.
PPP, as usual, decided to indulge in widespread election fraud....dont forget the EC carded 76 of their MPs....76!!!!. Hence, after the wheels of justice ground slowly, and as party exec members were involved, the PPP were disbanded.
This, combined with their obvious incompetance, and also their increasingly open support of Public Enemy No 1 (Thaksin), persuaded the other coalition members that they should shift allegiance. No doubt it was bung season in BKK.....
So what we have in one coalition government being replaced by another....The PPP, despite its majority, still ran a coalition government....when they changed sides the majority became the minority.....thats normal politics.
see further UK politics in the 70s, and European politics through the 70s to the 2000s..... and for a current minority coalition government we have Israel in the past two weeks.
If the PPP had chosen to fight the elections fairly, and then when in power govern properly, they would still be there. They didnt, thank god, and showed what a bunch of incompetent slaves of Toxin they are.
Like the Major era conservatives they are too stupid to see that their platform is no longer popular, and too ignorant and entrenched to change.
At least the Democrats do what they are supposed to do, when allowed to by the UDD terrorists or parliamentary time wasting PT tactics, ie run the country, pass legislation etc. The PPP failed miserably to do anything except mudsling, abuse authority and steal.
At least Abhsit presents a media friendly face to the world, rather than a foul mouthed toad faced bigot (Samak), or an incompetent stumble mouthed wet blanket stooge (Somchai)....neither of which made any effort to directly engage with the international press. I doubt whether either could even speak acceptable English, let alone work out that the audience isn't Thai so maybe a different approach is needed.
My only disappointment with the current administration is that after Oct 08 they are so scared of exerting force or enforcing the law they let the UDD run riot and throw IEDs at politicians and the press.
(incidentally....does anyone have a clue what a "ping pong" bomb actually is.....it seems to have been big enough to injure two press reporters).
Id say its time to take off the velvet glove and apply the iron fist. At least they wear red...so the stains wont be so bad.

The majority of these salaried workers recieving the handouts do not pay income tax either, as not liable to due to exemption level. Many of the farmers, vendors etc not receiving it are also not liable for income tax.sandman67 wrote:the reason that the cheques go to salaried worker and not street vendors is that they dont pay tax....simple. same reason Mrs S wont get a cheque....she doesnt exist as far as the Finance ministry is concerned.
To qualify for the handout the worker needs to be in the governments Social Security Fund, and I believe this is only a voluntary option for the self-employed. So it could viewed that many low paid workers are not receiving them because they have not joined a voluntary government scheme.
