Govt raises excise taxes on liquor, beer
The cabinet on Wednesday has approved the increase of excise taxes on liquor, beer and brandy for seven to nine per cent, which will be effective from midnight onwards.
The cabinet expected that the increase would give the government 6.3 billion baht per year.
Excise tax on beer will be increased to 58% from 55%, brandy to 48% from 45%, while the price of rice whiskey will be raised to 120 baht/litre from 110 baht/litre, for example.
Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said the ministry is restructuring the overall tax system, and excise taxes on other products could be increased.
The decision has caused the price of beer to be about four to five baht more expensive while that of brandy to be 19 baht more costly.
