Where do you meet the taxi driver at Swampy?

Post by dtaai-maai »

My daughter's arriving (at typically short notice) on Wednesday - I'm sending a local taxi to meet her. I understand (not having travelled since Swampy was finished) that the meeting and greeting point is now quite a long way from the arrivals area - what do I tell her?

Hi DM,
I would get your taxi driver to go up the escalator to the food hall and wait just at the top because when you are trying to get out of the main hall its the usuall touts grabbing hold of you e.t.c.

kendo.

It's a zoo DM, you know.

Just me, but when any of my family turns up, I just go meet them, they aren't used to it and solves any dramas straight away.

However, last time I went there, a year ago, there is a taxi pick up/drop off point right outside the arrivals area, but that's the circus/touts area.

There is a normal taxi area, ie the usual Bangkok taxi meter area is a little further away but is just a bit further away from the circus area, just got to walk a bit further in an adjacent direction but there are obvious signs.

There's a map here or the relevent/useful web site,

http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/85

To be honest with you it'll be difficult to get the taxi driver you send to link up with her. Probably easier to just let her take a taxi meter from the normal place away from the circus area or if she's travelling alone then just 'bite the bullet' and take time out to meet her.

Or, as Kendo suggested, meet at a preordained position.

Good luck, not an easy one that, fraught with possible screw ups.

Spitfire's right, if you're sending a local taxi anyway, it shouldn't cost you anything to travel up with him - of course, if you have the time.

Or if you send the guy from the Boat - who spends his life doing Swampy runs - along with your daughters name on a little board, and flight details - I'm sure he will find her at arrivals. He speaks excellent English.

Tell her when she comes out into the main arrivals hall to turn right inside the arrivals hall and walk about 30m and there is a meeting point, all the taxi drivers that are waiting for people are there is marked up meeting point
It has changed a lot lately and they do not allow taxi drivers to wait close to the arrivals doors ( that space is reserved for the hotel meet and greet people) the doors from baggage claim through to the arrivals hall
last time I came through there was no touts at the arrivals, they were either upstairs shouting down or around the food court downstairs where the bus leaves from.
It seems that the airport is getting organised and does nopt allow them into the arrivals hall unless they are waiting for a particular flight \ person.
It been like that since january and i have been three times since then.

Thanks very much, one and all. I can't go myself, as I'm working. I don't even know the flight details yet, but as soon as I do I'll tell both daughter and driver to head for the meeting point mentioned by Rob.

Rob's correct in his directions but as an extra help the sign above the meeting area is No. 3 she can't miss it so don't worry.

All the doors out of the arrival hall are numbered from one to ten with a large number above, so if I can't find my driver I just go to a door where it's quite and phone him up to come find me.

Glad to hear that D-M; from my experience most taxi drivers spend much of their lives picking people up at the airport and they actually get pretty good at finding their customers.
