Clean and speed up computer

Post by PET »

Can somebody recommend a good clean up system to increase the speed generally - also to clean up the start up procedure which is also slow?

I did sign up for something called 'Registry.... something or other which claimed to do all of this, but after insisting on a free trial I could see no benefit.

I guess this may be a problem with lots of people but I am just hoping that there may be something out there that does work.

I use Advanced System Care, which comes as a free version and a pro version. It is the best register cleaner I have been using thus far. They do also have a better defragger than what Microsoft provide for the Windows Vista.

Never bothered with those programs that claim to do it as I don't know exactly what they're doing. I use the force and do it manually! These should offer some guidance:

XP:

Vista:

Or if you don't want to fiddle that much drop it round to these guys who will do it for you:

I am happy with the performance of the Advanced Vista Optimizer 2009.

Site only offers a 15-day free trial version so your options after that are: buy the program or work you way around that.

I also use the free version of Advanced System Care on a regular basis, but I agree with Buksi that the best way to do it is to learn more about the causes and fix them manually (sometimes with brute force!) :D

Always back up your system before messing with the registry... you can get into a lot of trouble doing that if you don't know what you are doing.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Windows does tend to accumulate crap at an alarming rate. These methods are only temporary measures. Frankly with Windows it's generally a good idea to backup -> Format -> Reinstall about once every 3 months, or 6 months if you're very tolerant.

Fragmentation is a large enough issue, but also crap left in your registry after uninstalling software is also a problem, and the obvious problems of malware.

Needless to say, I don't get any of these problems, having a non-fragmenting OS, perennially clean uninstallation, and a lack of in-the-wild malware </smug mode>
