Trip to Vietnam

Was going to come back to Thailand this year but do to work problems have not been able.
Have decided (as I can only get 10 days) to go to Vietnam as it is the best connection that I can get from KL on the day I fly from Australia and also the time that I arrive.

Am going to fly into Saigon, spend a day or so there and then perhaps go down to Vung Tua for a few days.
Then will make my way upto to Hoi An for the rest of the time.
Can get flights Ok between Saigon & Danang to visit Hoi An and will use them because of limited time, rather than any other forms of transport.

Just wondered if anyone has been over recently and could give me a few ideas on what it is like over there.

Roads in Vietnam are bad and travel by road is very slow; hence flying between cities is the best option. HCMC to Vung Tau by road is the best part of a day's journey. There is a crappy old hydrofoil that looks as though it was left over from the war and that runs from HCMC to Vung Tau - about 1 3/4 hours from memory.

I was working from Vung Tao about three years ago. It usually took about 3 hours by road from Ho Chi Min city to Vung Tao, along a dual carriageway blocked up with motorbikes and trucks. The alternative is the hydrofoil, which takes about an hour and a half.

Vung Tao is a nice enough place, there are a couple of decent hotels there. If you have never been to Vietnam, you are not supposed to take 'ladies' back to your room at the hotel, but they do not mind if you pay for an extra room. If you are going with your wife, then that is a different story!

Trips worth doing is probably the tunnels from the war and there is a gun emplacement on the top of a hill from old French colonial days.

If you are a golfer, there is a good 27 hole course there.

Thanks DSB & Jaja, have seen about the Hydrofoil, there is apparently two different companies operating hydrofoils to Vung Tua, one looks decidely better than the other, so will use one of them to go there and back.
Can get flights ok from Saigon to Danang when I go upto Hoi An with Jetstar Asia.
Just want to use this trip to have a look round incase I want to go back again and tour round a bit more.
