Tailor updates?

Post by migrant »

Hi All,

Heading over end of October, early November. I don't wear as many suits as before, but need to pick up a couple.

Last suits done in BKK but we won't be around there much for the fittings.

Did a forum search for HH area and found some late 2008 comments.

Any recent successes, or failures?

Thanks

Hey migrant.
You will just have to look for shop with a Nepale/Burmese tout outside.
He will shake your hand (Danish paestry comes to mind), speak a few words to you in your own language. If all the above happens, you have found THE tailor.

I assume by the wording of your post that you have had problems. As one who has had nothing but good service from various Hua Hin tailors, would you mind elaborating on your bad experiences please?

I am writing this from work, and the trousers I'm wearing are 3 years old, and the shirt I'm wearing is 16 months old. Both wearing very well.

Tailors

Post by DenisT »

Try Saga tailors on Petchkasem almost opposite the clock Tower. I used them a few weeks ago, service and quality were good. Not "pushy". Price for a ladies suit , skirt + jacket ,was Bht 4500

Migrant, unless you are a special size or need a special cut or something, I always found better pricing and better quality suits at places in the U.S. like the "Mens Warehouse". I bought some suits from a tailor shop in Bangkok and they lost their shape after a couple of dry cleanings and started to come apart in a year or so. The "off the rack" ones I bought in the states lasted much longer and looked just as good.

Contrary to what HHFarang says, the point I didn't make very well in my last post was that off the shelf trousers in the UK would usually last me 6 months maximum. The trousers I am currently wearing are showing no signs of wear after 3 years.

I started using Thai tailors because of my size, and difficulty buying clothes in the UK.

There used to be an old (about 75 ) seamstress in a small shop on Naebkehardt Rd, just before the cake shop going North back in 2001.

She was fantastic with sowing and making clothes.

I took her an old, tailor made shirt from the UK as a pattern, plus about 10 different rolls of silk and other cloths and she made me exact copies.
The sowing was perfect, not a stitch or button out of place, not bad considering her age.

Whenever we had friends over we advised them to get the cloth in BKK and have the cloths made there. She was not expensive but a bit slow, however it was well worth the wait.

I had looked at the tailors in town and in the Thai silk village on Naebkehardt and it seems that they send the cloth and patterns out to Thai tailors in the backstreets of HH, but insist they are made in their flash premises. For that you pay a premium of several thousand Baht and get the same Thai tailor.

Shop around and you can get well made clothes in Hua Hin and not too pricey.

A half decent made to measure suit in the UK will set you back £800-£1000, so choose the right material in BKK and get it made in HH and the savings are obvious, IMHO. :)

Sadly, when my wife was there last year the old lady had gone.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Maybe there is a difference in quality in UK vs US trousers. I'm still wearing shorts I brought from the U.S. 5 years ago every day here... :P

Before you order any suits here in Thailand you should learn more and this guy on this site knows what he is talking about;

http://www.thetruthabouttailors.com/

First, when they talk about tailor made suits here it is in fact 'made to measure' suits you will get. There are very few real tailors in Thailand making real tailor made suits.

Be also careful with the word 'blend', e.g. a 'cashmere blend', if the tailor tries to sell you that fabric it probably sounds nice because of the magic word 'cashmere' here, but the fabric probably does not contain more than one or two per cent cashmere wool.

Most labeled fabrics are also fake as most such fabrics here are copies made in China. You can get genuine Valentino, Ermenguildo Zenga and Loro Piana etc. but that will cost you, and there are only a hand-full tailors in Bangkok who have such quality fabrics.

Another thing you should pay attention to is that 'Italian Made' does not mean the same as 'Made In Italy'.

Further, many of the so-called tailors here are claiming that they can made suits in 24 hours or less. That is not possible unless they cut corners. What they do is they glue the inner lining instead of using proper stitching. The result, after one or two dry cleans the jacket will start to show bubbles and it is no longer good looking.

Shirts and trouser are often quite good but be careful when buying suits and jacket.

Thanks for all the info!! :thumb:

I had a couple suits made at Majestic up by Nana in BKK back in 2005. Those, plus a couple older suits, have held me until now.

I try not to wear suits, but do need them at times so figured 2 will hold me over.

Majestic had 3 fittings, but we aren't planning on being in BKK much so figured HH would be a better place.
