Hot salt Beef (New York Deli Cornd Beef)
Friday from 4.30pm until early evening, Hot Salt Beef sandwiches or, as a New Yorker would say, New York Deli Corned Beef sandwiches, on Rye, Mustard and sliced Gherkins and Latke’s will be served at the Buffalo Tavern.
Don’t ask the price, come down and be pleasantly surprised.

Good man!shunpike wrote:Wow...I have fond memories of eating smoked meat sandwiches at the "Main", and "Schwartz' Hebrew Deli" on Boulevard St-Laurent in Mtl! And latkes!! The latkes at the "Main" where outstanding.
I'll give Buffalo Taverns "smoked meat" and latkes a go when I'm next in town for sure.

You know your stuff, Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen, est. 1912, aka Schwartz's. Not wishing to be pedantic but its "on" The Main (Blvd. St. Laurent which historically divided English Montreal and French Montreal). The smoked meat sandwich (pastrami to New Yorkers) was invented in Montreal about 1905 by Ben Kravitz ("Ben's Delicatessen" on the corner of Matcalfe and deMaisonneuve, now defunct after almost 100 years).

Been to Ben's too, before it's demise...but the smoked meat at Schwartz' was better. I was refering to the "Main" deli not "The Main" as in Boul. St-Laurent. The deli called the "Main" was across the street from Warshaws, the grocery store. I lived in the neighbourhood for a decade in the 80's and earlies 90's. Great town Mtl, most interesting in North America for my money.johnnyk wrote:Good man!shunpike wrote:Wow...I have fond memories of eating smoked meat sandwiches at the "Main", and "Schwartz' Hebrew Deli" on Boulevard St-Laurent in Mtl! Warshaw's where the pickles were still in barrels of brine. I lived on Napoleon briefly as a student.
Never went to "The Main" deli, I left in 1975 before it appeared and with a name like that I suspect it was a yuppie joint. Don't know if its stll there.
Yes, I agree Ben's was much inferior.
Under-rated and outside downtown was/is Snowdon deli for a 50-50 - smoked meat and chopped liver. Heart attack on rye!
Other athentic deli joints were Benny's on Park with the neon star of David where taxi drivers stopped for a 4 am smoked meat, Kravitz's just a few doors from Schwartz's, Habib's up in Rosemount.
Now if we can get Buffalo Bill to do some steamies....

Some steamies! LOL, takes me back...
The Main was a bit of a dive really, open all night, surly men operating the grill, naugahyde booths. Great place. They did good latkes and babyback ribs, the steaks were good too, but Schwartz had the best steaks. All the Jews who had done well for themselves and had left the neighbourhood for Snowden, TMR or Toronto would show up on Saturday and Sunday and line up at Schwartz' for a fat smoked meat and a pickle.

My wife is from Hampstead and hung out in Snowdon as a kid. I gobbled steamies in the east end as a kid (Montreal Pool Room the gold steamie standard).shunpike wrote:Some steamies! LOL, takes me back...
