Punctuation

Post by PeteC »

OK, time has come for this thread. At times I feel I'm incorrect given the comments by those who seem to know better. Do they really, or is it just British public school smoke?

Granted, I don't remember all from those years ago, but it's worked so far. :D

Is there a problem with the below sentence?

Let's have more examples please, where the poster makes a deliberate mistake and we see if anyone can catch it.

Punctuation only, not grammar. Pete

"Once on board and doors closed, you play the cards you're dealt, and hope for an evacuation."

Mai lu, buntee ching...LOL.

Yes, I think you're correct and thanks. I hope there are more examples forthcoming . As an old Nun told me, if you don't use commas correctly, you're in a coma. She's probably right, but she's dead now. Pete

The power of a comma:

The wombat eats roots, shoots and leaves.

"There's no plausible or convincing reason, certainly no evidential one, to believe that there is such an entity (= deity) and that all observable phenomena, including the cosmological ones... are explicable without the hypothesis; you don't need the assumption."

There's more than a comma wrong with that mate.

I wouldn't put a comma after examples but I may be grammatically incorrect. ImageImage

"Once on board and doors closed, you play the cards you're dealt, and hope for an evacuation."
It doesn't have to be wrong as English has no hard rules.
It could be used like that, with a comma before 'and' if it was conversation or poetry and the final part was after a pause or perhaps supposed to be ironic.

From an article on punctuation:

"During the First World War, Sir Roger Casement was charged with treason. Casement's defence argued that the Treason Act of 1351 was unpunctuated and that his guilt was therefore not clear-cut.

The words of that Act, which was originally written in Norman French, said that, "If a man be adherent to the king's enemies in his realm giving to them aid and comfort in the realm or elsewhere ...", he was guilty of treason.
His defence suggested that, since Casement had carefully done all his plotting "elsewhere" (and not "in the realm"), he was technically innocent.

The judges went down to the Public Record Office to look at the original statute. They found under a microscope a faint virgule (early version of the comma). It was this comma, inserted by a 14th century scribe (whose only qualification for the job was perhaps neat handwriting) that Casement was sensationally hanged on, 565 years later.

Perhaps, the moral of the story is: do not neglect punctuation."

Yes, I concur; there is something wrong, there. Several matters, in fact, are wrong. Firstly, the matter of the
OP, your's truly, not being able to correct an involuntary mistake. Secondly; the obvious disinclination on the
part moderators, who, in this context, shall remain nameless, to remove the superfluous posting, namely the first one.
