Thai Currency

Post by PeteC »

Another thread reminded me we've never really talked about this, or appreciated what bank notes used to look like here in the past. Below is a good source as a starter.

Special mention to TH79 which IMO was a work of art and the photo doesn't do it justice. The older 1, 5 and 10 baht notes are worth a look also, as well as the first 500 baht note. Pete

That's interesting Pete, I've just had a look and I've got a 20bt and 100bt that are TH88 and TH89 on you're site.
I was given them by my partners sister and told they were lucky, but I never had any idea what they were.
I don't know if there is any logic to them being lucky beyond them being about 30 years old.

If you go to the very bottom of that link page Steve you'll see 'bank notes for sale'. Your 100 baht is worth $11.00 now which is lucky I guess. :D. Your 20 baht is not listed so it may be rare and retained by collectors. Pete

Yes, I'm surprised it's still worth anything as most things that the sister-in-law considers lucky involve things like frogs.
If I tell her a 100bt note is worth $11 she will instantly buy a lottery ticket with it!

Thanks for making me laugh so hard this early in the morning Steve! I'm not a "morning person" and reading your post cracked me up. It also sounds way too familier!
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Is it correct that the 500Bht note you described was made in Oz and was the first using the new polymer technology for Thailand??

No, that was the 50 baht note. I think TH99 and/or 102 on the web site. The 50 baht was the only one ever made of the plastic material. I liked them as never got wet, damp or worn out. Apparently the Thai's did not like them at all. Pete
