Round Two Pin Plugs - Terrible Connection In Power Extension

Post by JimmyGreaves »

Have a few appliances TV , DVD that have two round pins, They fit ok directly into my panasonic 3 hole wall outlets but can't seem to find a 4 - 6 gang power extenstion where they have a nice snug fit, they wobble and fall out with the slightest touch. Is this just me or is this a problem? Any advice welcome :D

A very common problem. I have wrapped a thin layer of aluminum foil around each pin, that does the trick. But be careful so you don't make a short.... 8)

I've found this too with the cheaper extension cord devices like the ones from Tesco or Hua Hin Shopping Mall. The more expensive ones from computer stores or electronics places seem to be better.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Easiest solution for tv dvd etc replace the plug with spade type.
For tranformers either as as already advised use a quality extension lead or cheaper buy a socket and back box and make your own. Another suggeation use a travel adapter that has spade type pins.

These cheap and very poor quality extension cords, mostly Chinese made, should better be avoided in the first place as they are a potential risk of fire.

This year noticed the brother inlaw in BKK had sparks coming out when I plugged in, and out due to the looseness mentioned above. We told him we would get a new one for him.

He said, never mind they all do that

This is all very true, mrs nevets is fanatical at puling plugs out that are not in use. It would seem they are as Migrant said all the same.

Who needs plugs? Just stick the bare ends of the wires into the socket like many workmen do. Pete

I remember my first Tri-ang electric train set in the UK (46 years ago). That's exactly how you used to connect the train set to the transformer.

It gets better. We've had workmen here building things like the carport, gate etc., where there is no plug close by. They have some kind of wire contraption with copper hooks on the end, open up the meter box on the street and hook these things to the polls directly behind the meter. Even they are careful with this procedure and proceed very slowly and carefully. I guess if you make a mistake you get the meter shot through your chest. Pete

You're forgiven George. Hope you're watching the NE/Miami game. I can't as only have Nola/Wash here which isn't a bad one. Pete

The track side of the train set transformer would have been very low voltage--maybe 12 volts or so--so not really dangerous.

What these people are doing with mains voltage is lethal!

One thing that you need to be careful with using transformers--especially units that are "multi-purpose"-- is that they are "double wound", and not what is called an "auto-transformer". It is difficult to tell which type they are just by looking at them, they need checking with a multi-meter. The primary and secondary windings of "proper" transformers are electrically isolated from each other.

Lesson over!
