Bomb detectors dont work

Post by sandman67 »

Now theres a lot of chat on here about how we get overcharged by bars, overcharged blah blah blah

The following article may cast light on this issue
Bomb detectors fail test
By The Nation

Prime Minister Ahbisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday that the controversial GT200 bomb detectors have been able to detect only four out of 20 explosives in scientific tests conducted by Science Ministry.
The result show that it would be therefore very risky to use the detectors.

"We won't buy any more GT200 bomb detectors as they do not work. It would be very risky to use them as, of the 20 tests conducted, results were achieved with only four, or just 25 per cent," the prime minister said.

The Science Ministry conducted the tests on the devices over the weekend.

The tests were undertaken at the Sirindhorn Science facility within the Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani. Five rounds of tests were undertaken without problems before noon with another 20 rounds carried out by evening, as required by the testing committee. The test results for all 20 detectors have been stored in a deposit box for later analysis by the committee.

The prime objective of the test was to ascertain the device's efficacy with results reported to the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The GT200 devices tested were those used by police and military units in the South.

Earlier, senior military ordnance officers and bomb-disposal personnel briefed the Cabinet and insisted that the GT200 was "sufficiently efficient". They said it had detected explosives, weapons and narcotics in 173 out of 236 incidences.

"The success rate is higher than 80 per cent - beyond the minimum efficiency rate required," they said.
now I always thought that 4 out of 20 was 20%, and that 80% of 236 was 188.8 not 173. silly me...should have done my maths study at a Thai school eh? I obviously should have studied science at the military school as well, as they seem to be able to work the machines which dont work anywhere else.....

but the best bit of all - they are surprised by the result.

There was a report a few weeks ago about these "detectors" apparently the guy selling them had sold over £85 millions worth to foreign countries  none of which work.
The "detector card" only contains an electronic tag like the security tag you see on cloths and cost around 5 pence to produce.

They (the UK Government) are trying to put a stop to him exporting to other countries.

I would love to have seen the guys sales pitch for these products.
Apparently, his last job was selling sand to the Arabs, a position in which he excelled.

The guy making these things was based around here where I am now in Somerset and I think he's been arrested for fraud.
The things were a complete scam and noticeably all the countries that bought them were those where the odd bribe doesn't go amiss.
The only thing that has baffled us here is why you couldn't make a half decent bomb detector for the money involved and you would still be able to make a tidy profit.

See this article from the 14th. It makes it clear how entwined and crooked this entire deal is. Par for the course. Pete

Fraud - are you kidding. Given that they have failed to detect allegedly bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan which have subsequently killed God knows how many, how about culpable homicide!!

Apparently also the Thais have realised that mans best friend aka: Fido can do a better job but are reluctant to use them as the presence of Fidos can upset the religious and cultural sensibilities of some folk. Would hate to see what a bomb exploding in their midst causes these sensibilities.
If only you could train up a soi dog. The Thais would be able to make squillions.

Yes, considering the levels of corruption that seem to have been involved in this, if it wasn't such a lethal situation you would think that these countries got what they deserved.
I'm actually amazed that someone could sell something like this to countries with serious security problems whilst knowing that it was completely useless.

The government will investigate the procurement of GT200 "bomb detectors" and ask the British manufacturers to take responsibility for providing such false technology, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

"I will seek an explanation from the UK government as to why it has allowed the export of such ineffective devices," he told reporters. "Companies should not be allowed to misrepresent faulty products and export them."

Abhisit also urged agencies to stop using the device because it had been proven to be ineffective.

However, Fourth Army Region commander Lt Gen Pichet Pisaichorn, who oversees the restive South, said he would continue using the GT200 detectors even though scientific tests have proved them to be ineffective.

There will be people involved in the procurement process at the Thai end who will be trying to avoid any investigation into this; from the details emerging about other countries buying this device, huge sums of money were spent on 'training and middlemen'.

When entering Swampypoom Airport car park, or most of the 5 star Hotels in Hua Hin, I find the use of the 'mirror on a stick' as used by the excellently trained security guards, most comforting.

Can anybody tell me what they are [not] looking for?

Banned in Oz as they were used by blokes who put mirrors on their boots to check out the lingerie (or lack of) in clubs and on escalators.

The army is going to 'will' it to work I guess. I understand that with some strong psychic vibes by the operator it can rid a premises of cockroaches, cure hemorrhoids, and pick up Cousin Brucie broadcasts from WABC New York in the 1960's being reflected from space. "..and the Lord giveth you the 11th Commandment: Save thy face at any cost!"
