Isn't that 200 cigs/1 carton just the limit for duty free buys BB? Don't want to be controversial, but I did think that any split cartons/packets loose in checked luggage were OK? I've certainly never had a problem with that - but maybe just been lucky!

Its been done as well as carting out multiple copies of fake cds. It is a risk because if caught by UK customs it can resullt in confiscation of your passport. Up to you if you want to gamble

Depends if you are travelling back to the UK directly or via a EU city such as Amsterdam.
If the former, then 200. If the latter then 400 duty free (you can claim both flights) or 800 duty paid - note, legally this is 800 duty paid in EU state. Those are the rules anyway........

I tried buying 200 duty free in Bangkok and 200 'duty paid' whilst transiting in Amsterdam. I was stopped in Manchester and asked if I had anything to declare. I told him about the cigs. He told me that the limit is determined by your departure country so 200 was all I was allowed. He said that I could keep them but warned me that I should not do again. I do not even smoke - I was buying them for friends.
no more dePreston
As a warning, when you buy your duty frees at the airport, they always ask for your passport and boarding card. This info is put on the aircraft manifest, and is usually the first thing to leave the aircraft at the other end.
The customs know how much duty free you have on you before you have even picked up your bags.

didgerydodar These are from Government web site.
Arrivals from EU countries
When arriving into the UK from an EU country you can bring in an unlimited amount of most goods.
For excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco, there are no restrictions. However you must meet the conditions below:
* You transport the goods yourself.
* The goods are for your own use or as a gift. If the person you give the goods to pays you in any way (including reimbursing you for any expenses or payment in kind), then it's not a gift and the goods may be seized.
* The goods are duty and tax paid in the EU country where they were acquired.
Tobacco allowances from out side EU countries
You can bring in one from the following list:
* 200 cigarettes
* 100 cigarillos
* 50 cigars
* 250g of tobacco
Or you can combine these allowances. For example, if you bring in 100 cigarettes (half your full allowance) you can also bring in 25 cigars (half your full allowance). This would make up your full tobacco allowance. You can’t go over your total tobacco allowance.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
cigs
I do not smoke but in Canada it does not matter whether you purchased the cigarettes duty free or off the street, all you are allowed to bring back is 200 cigarettes. If you bring back more and are caught you are subject to a fine and the price of the cigarettes with the appropriate tax that you would have paid in Canada.

Shopping in Dubai, I never have to show my passport nor Boarding pass, all they want to know if I travel directly so they can pack in the sealed bags.
in vienna they "hand-pick" their prey, I get picked 50% of the time when alone. 50% of those tme they do a short questionair, another 50% I must unpack at least one bag. if you decide to take extra's, make sure they are not detected.
One of my favorites it to have just one Pac k of cigs, On bottle of scotch , all in the Dury Freebag
then in the camera bag ( Backpack), I unpack two sleeves of cigartes, n the compartment that is hidden vfrom view.
If they want to see camera bag I JUST unzip the camera compartment, and they see the camera stuff (2 DLSR ( more then 2 years old) and a few Lenses, that takes the attention. and sinces used seem to be olderm, they stop searching anyway.
Once they found a 2nd sleeve of cigies, HAD TO PAY 20€ penalty and cigs where gone ( good I had another 3 sleeves hidden, so overal price was sill way below the 40€ per sleeve here in Austria

of the 20trips over the last few years, 10 checks, 5 times searched, once they found something.
