Just a warning; my wife traveled internationally recently and there are warnings all over the airport (Swampy) for travelers going to Europe saying that if they are caught in Europe with fake brand name goods they will be fined heavily.

Clothing you may get away with (if the amount is not excessive and it doesn't look new) but I wouldn't pick up any fake name brand handbags or watches. They are apparently on the lookout for such items when entering most European countries.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Well I bought a Rolex watch for 500 baht. The man said it was genuine :|
The wind blows cold on brake and heath
The weeping willows cry
The mountains dark are jagged teeth
Against a leaden sky.

All I can say is don't get it wet. I never take my watch off (I have a Seiko dive watch and it has been off my arm twice in 15 years to change the battery. Before that I bought a fake Rolex dive watch in Pattaya and it died the same day when I wore it into the shower...

Share your view HHfarang. Those fake watches are all waterproof tested. Once the water is in it will never come out again........:)
Made good experiences with fake clothes though. I always buy them at MBK in Bangkok. Good Quality for small money.

A mate of mine bought 3 fake Rolex watches in Vietnam when i asked him why 3? he recons he gets about 12 to 18mth out of one so 3 will keep in good stead for a few years...as for clothes...there all fakes in the markets, let me put it another way, the only place your guaranteed to get an original is from a department store in a big shopping center... and someone said MBK...the fakes in there are a bit pricey compared to Patunam which is down the road from center world which is near by.

Last year on the French, Italian border, the French were stopping cars and searching for fakes, such as handbags and perfume. There was a stack of fake Gucci bags a metre high on the road.

If you were caught, the gendarmes gave you the choice of a fine or you get to watch the fakes being destroyed. Handbags and fake clothes etc were cut up and perfume was smashed into a oil drum.

Now, they are not giving you a choice and have spread their wings to the airports and will impose heavy fines for all fakes that you import.

Any flight from Thailand, is Christmas come early for them, so be warned.

A fine, could easily triple the cost of your holiday. :(
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

A lot of BKK "fakes" aren't fakes.
There is a huge garment industry, some of it churning out stuff under license. Somchai simply gets some people to put in overtime and the over-production is sent off to his brother-in-law's stall in Pratunam.

Agreed JohnnyK - so where would that leave people being checked on re-entry to places such as the UK with this type of genuine stuff?
And what about the odd definitely fake item bought for personal use? I never go out of my way to buy designer fakes - personally I find more of interest in the local branded or ethnic Thai made clothing. But last trip I did get a fake Diesel watch, simply because of the colour. So is taking something like that home still a risk?
I guess anyone found with large quantities in various sizes can expect to have a problem, which could probably be avoided simply by posting the stuff to themselves rather than carrying it home. But the question remains - how can people really be sure of what they buy? Even goods in places like the HH Shopping Mall have often got to be either fake - or fallen off the back of a lorry judging by some of the prices - and I'm thinking here particularly of some of the makeup.

I agree, if you have 34 Prada handbags or 77 Armani shirts the customs boyz might take offense. Not too much risk if you are sensible I think, unless its a very bad fake that gives itself away.
If it is genuine from Somchai's factory then no worries, its not a fake.
How can people protect themselves? I would presume if they are looking for fakes then there's nothing to protect themselves from: a Chanel t-shirt from Pratunam for 100 baht is risk free. Paying $150 for the same thing from Siam Paragon means you have more $ than brains IMO (it's still just a t-shirt, folks). Make-up seems riskier because its a compound and unless you have some way to analyze it on the spot then you don't know until you get clogged pores and ugly discoloured blotches on yer mug!

Dont think ace knows what he is talking about, tee shirts are not all created equal with various price taggs.
Dont think i need to go into the pros and cons of a fake lactose and a genuine one...i own both genuine and fakes and there is a huge difference between them not just $AU110.....you can spot a fake a mile away...i noticed a number of Europeans wearing fake lactose tee shirts at the airport as i was leaving for home once, the very first thing is the rolled collars.
Luckily here in AU lactose isnt a popular brand yet...but its getting pushed these days so most aussies wouldnt notice a copy,......anyway i starch my collars and i only wear once then in the wash.
I do agree that the quality is very high there (market clothes) much better than the rubbish market clothes we have here (often chinese made), and that being so im happy to buy market/copy etc as well as designer gear in the shopping centers when im in BKK.
Customs at Melbourne airport has never asked to look in my bags or my partner who is Thai, they tend to target older asians fearing that they may be bringing in food or plants/seeds etc.
Anyway i dont mind buying a few copys...but my partner now has the taste of the good life and its got to be an original for her now

I'd like to know where to purchase real "export clothing". I've paid a lot of money for name brand stuff in the U.S. and the label inside says "Made in Thailand". That stuff should be available here for 1/10 the price I paid in the U.S. but I can't find it!

I'd question if any of yours are genuine.

Or maybe you're all Lactose intolerant.
