Thailand 124th in Global Peace Index

Post by STEVE G »

BANGKOK, 9 June 2010 (NNT) – Thailand is ranked at 124 out of 149 countries in the Global Peace Index (GPI) conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace published on 8 June 2010, while New Zealand is ranked top for two consecutive years.

Thailand was ranked at 118 in 2009. Within the ASEAN region, the Kingdom is less peaceful than Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia but more peaceful than the Philippines and Myanmar.

Based on the list, Iceland has been ranked second most peaceful country followed by Japan, Austria, Norway, Ireland, Denmark, Luxemburg, Finland and Sweden, respectively, while the least peaceful country is Iraq followed by Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Pakistan.

New Zealand compared to Thailand is interesting.
A place with no next door neighbours, closed on Sundays and restricts conflict to sports. Cannibalism stopped 150 years to be replaced by Rugby.
Lamb and sweet potato anyone?
Sadly I don't think Thailand will improve on the table for a while, conflict without end seemingly in the south as well.

Not really surprising is it?

Thailand has been running through the same repetitive cycle since 1932; power, greed and corruption being the primary causes. Maybe it needs another hundred years to break it.

Not good at all.......

Regardless of the problems, I am still suprised at where Thailand ranks against some countries. Full data here http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi-data/#/2010/conf/

NZ first - what a shambles. You want to wander around some of the pubs in Auckland where the Islanders and Maoris clash. It ain't peaceful ha, ha.

To show how much things can change in a relatively short time, Vietnam is 38th which seems amazing considering the upheaval it went through in the second part of the twentieth century.

"Thailand has been running through the same repetitive cycle since 1932"
Sadly it seems Thailand has to go through many reincarnations before it finds peace. but it has a touch of democracy unlike many countires higher up the peace list.[/color]
