Just curious

Post by tarakandi »

I am curious as to why this forum seems to have more than it’s fair share of chronic moaners.

Do they regularly fall foul of the MIB?

Are they being unnecessarily penalized by the local authority?

Do they struggle with the language?

Do they have issues with their visa status?

Have they retired just a bit too early and have too much time on their hands?

Or is it that they just can’t help themselves and just love having a good old moan?

Everyone has a pet peeve or two but I think we do pretty well on here and most just vent occasionally.

Take a look at the other three or so forums bigger than HHAD whose names cannot be mentioned, and you'll see big time moaning about highly important earth shattering issues like the weather is too hot, or too wet, or too dry, Thai food is too spicy, shower water pressure is too low, and buses smell of exhaust fumes.

There are a lot of expats here who discovered they shouldn't really be here but it's too late for one reason or another. I think HHAD has very few if any of those types. Pete

Agree with HHADdict I find a lot less moaning on this forum and of course it is human nature to have the occasional moan what a strange world it would be if everybody was so content that nobody had a whinge. Also it is sometimes better to vent your frustrations on a forum than in front of your wife and suffer the consequences involved.

Here's an example from elsewhere. I can supply a few dozen in short order if wanted. Many of these people don't realize where they are. Pete

"OK,
Now 3.30 in a Moo Baan just outside Sankamphaeng
12.50- no notice- power off for about 30 min
then on for 2 min, then off for two min then off for about 40 min
3.30, seems to be back on
I was working on a video edit which I saved because I a UPS
What about others?
Are there no dialysis machines/ cardiac res machines?

There was no wind/storm/rain so why?

why can't they lay a loop around when they instantly decide to stop the power?
I know Thais don't like to complain but is there nothing we ca do?"

I have a rep for being negative about Thailand.... thats OK because its an accusation I dont agree with. If I was I wouldnt still be here.

What I dont accept either though is people defending stuff that should be condemned.... our local plod for example. Sure on occasions they do a good job and are effective. That gets reported here on occasion, and hats off to the officers who raise the bar for what we can expect. I admire them as they must have the most dificult job in the world given the standard of their colleagues.

[Edited by Admin]

Now I dont mind a bit of graft and bilk here and there. Im used to it as Ive lived in India and Cambodia for a bit. But what has happened here is beyond a joke. Its gone from a bit of quiet tea fund graft to outright extortion.

Stating that they and the local Grammy Scam Squad properly enforce the law or IP rights is a delusion, a sign of ignorance, or a downright lie. They dont, and it deserves stating clearly that they do not. Its a scam. End of.

The police and councils tactics are almost universally ham handed and ill thought out. They wander round bars in mobs bilking the owners, intimidating staff or treating them like dirt and scaring the customers. [Edited by Admin]. Arbitarily slamming staff in clink and siezing computers without a warrant to levy arbitarily set fines, as the Grammy squad and their officer backup do, is not law enforcement - its extortion, theft and harrassment.

Another recent rant of mine concerned the local Internet No Service Provider 3BB/Maxnet and in particular their so called repair teams. This involved four - yes FOUR - different teams of idiots coming out and bodging a repair that failed within hours, in the end and after my failed attempts three times to demonstrate it wasnt the computer or router at fault eventually just repairing damage to the line that the first team had done whilst connecting another house in the same soi as mine.

The FOURTH time they came out (in two weeks) they send out a young lad who has some sense about him. He listens, goes outside, and starts looking at whats been going on with the line. I give him a bag of connector blocks and some electricians tape. He redoes all the connections between the house and end of soi junction. It works.

Now the first three teams, had they been smart enough to think "aha maybe farang know what he talk about" could have fixed it. I was telling them no DSI = line fault.... they just ignored me and Mrs S. They could have used blocks and tape rather than just twisting the wires together and shoving them back in the box..... but they didnt. So it cost me a week of work, and the company three wasted visits, all for 20bht of kit and a bit of job pride in doing it right first time.

These arent things I accept... sorry but Thailand isnt frickin year 2000 era Cambodia or Laos.

I dont expect things to work 100% and all the time, and dont think this is the west. But I will try my damndest to make sure my kids dont grow up having to deal with endemic corruption at all levels and the covering up incompetence with "mai pen rai" to save face. They deserve better and so does Thailand.

sandman67, your post has been edited, you have been warned against making sweeping generalizations about local authorities before. They do monitor this forum and we would like to remain online.

I'm sure they'll grow up with a healthy respect for others who have been less fortunate in the level, and quality, of education they have received. I'm sure they will learn to integrate and accept the society they have decided to live within, instead of spitting their dummy every so often labelling the local folk 'stupid' or 'idiots', which lets face it, failure to adapt to anothers' society and ways is pretty stupid in itself.

And I'm sure they'll appreciate that illegal businesses, that do not respect employees' rights under the countries Labour Laws, are in no position to whine when it is they who are on the receiving end. The occassional taste of our own medicine, translated into Thai, is something like ... som num na :naughty:

I don’t know and probably never will, but my advice to you would be to look to move on, there is no way you can make Thailand your permanent home.

You are obviously not able to balance the quirks and frustration of life here versus the life style/quality of life that can be achieved here.

I base this on having lived in Thailand for 25 years, 23 of them in Hua Hin and having known so many expats who lived here for up to 10+ years and yet they really struggled to adapt and eventually had to bite the bullet and move on.

As silly as the above post content about the power outage is, in that the foreigner didn't understand that outages are not usually planned but happen due to cars ramming poles or transformers blowing up, and the quickest fix is to address it and not build a power loop....it's equally as silly for Thais to ignore experienced advice from foreigners on a multitude of things that they have little experience with.

I don't think we can deny there is a general mindset with many Thais that a farang is a farang and what does he/she know about anything here? This is an example of the closed society Thailand was until recently with few in the population aware of anything at all outside of Thailand.

I'll defend SM to a degree in that constructive criticism here is not a bad thing if one approaches it properly and does it properly. I doubt he or anyone else initiates and conducts that criticism in the same manner that he composes a post meant to vent and get something off his chest. ChrisD put it well in an above post i.e., 'better to do it on here than in front of the wife or someone else'.

Now if SM or anyone else goes through life here acting like a loose cannon everyday, that's a different story. I don't know him personally but I have feeling he doesn't. Pete

You must live a very sheltered life tarakandi if you think this forum has more than its fair share of chronic moaners. In fact I come to this site, apart from wanting info on HH, but also because it is so friendly and whinger free. Google 'Thailand expat forums' and really find some whiner sites.

Anyway, that's my bellyache of the day over.
