Dogs on the Beach?

Post by dotx »

Is there an area on the beach where I can take my dog and let him run off-leash? I'm aware that might not be possible during the day, but what about in the evening, when the sunbathers have gone home? Just want to let him run and burn some energy (he has lots!) and he loves the water.

I used to take mine to the beach at the army camp on the left on the war to pranburi, about 3k out of town. You go to the security gate once through there turn right at the end go past what looks like a hotel turn left at the barrier at the end and there is a rough car park. Walk through the trees and there is miles of beach with NO stray soi dogs my do thought it was wonderful.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

The few times I've been on a Hua Hin beach, primarily south of the mountain, I've seen some hellacious dog fights caused by some dog walking down the beach and crossing some invisible territorial line. One was so bad one of the Thai horsemen had to break it up, lay the injured dog on the saddle and take him back up to the north end of the area.

I'd really be concerned about things like that and as lindosfan says, find a real safe place with no stray packs of dogs before you try it. Pete

Thanks for the warning. I didn't even think about that. I don't have a car, so I don't know if I could make it out of town with my dog. Maybe pay a taxi to take me and then go pick me up? Seems unlikely they'd do that for something less than a fortune.

There don't seem to be so many stray dogs on HH beach any more. I've walked it twice this week and don't recall seeing any.
I would think you'd be OK to give your mutt a trial walk and stay south of the Marriott. In fact, from around Condochain south, the beach is virtually deserted these days.
I can't promise that your dog won't attract others, but you won't be bothering any sunbathers as there simply aren't any. Even the little shacks that used to do decent business in the high season with sun loungers etc, about half way down to Takiab have packed up for the low season now.

Go down to the Sofitel access road to the beach. Keep your dog on a lead and after a 5 minute walk south and you will find the beach deserted. Take the lead off and let your dog go

In April I spent a bit of time sitting in the small bar behind the temple, below the Hilton and I saw quite a few people letting their dogs play in the sea by the rocks without any bother.
As mentioned above, just watch out for stray dogs that might want a fight, although I didn't see any around that area.

Thanks. I think I'll take a walk around the Sofitel and the Marriott so I get a better idea of what to expect before I take my dog along. I'll keep my eyes open for strays.

That would take you to the Paleo Beach Bar. The last time I was there, the beach dogs were numerous. However, that was 2 years ago. Things may have changed, but there's a source of free food for the dogs, so I doubt it.

BB

No tourists, no vendors and therefore no food

This year is really grim concerning tourism but great for the resident farang (no drop in prices though)

Tourists are focused round the town and the Hilton and the rest of the area is sparse

Thats still there, BB. But they've cut the deck chairs down to a small fraction of what they have in high season and I've noticed all of 4 or so people using them at around 10am.

There's also that warm, safe fuzzy feeling you get when carrying a can of pepper spray. Pete
