Place to play chess?
Place to play chess?
Are there any bars or cafes in Hua Hin that have chess boards and clocks?

These people might have visitors from HH/CA area and could probably give you some contact numbers. I remember there used to be a chess club some years ago at a place called Domino here in Hua Hin. Don't know if it exists any more.

What i'm looking for is an unformal setting where you could just drop in for a beer or 10 and play some blitz games (they tend to get funnier the larger your beer handicap until the point where it's just a mess). Would think that one or two boards/clocks would be a cheap investment for any bar.
A backgammon board would be nice too.

I don't know how the situation has changed now. When that club in the link started to play in my place in Bangkok in 2000, we had our sets and clocks brought in from Finland. I there are players here they might have their own clocks. I really don't know much else as I'm not a player myself.

I'd also be interested in this though you'll have a hard time finding chess sets in Hua Hin, I eventually found one in a shopping mall in Kanjanaburi.Yung wrote:Are there any bars or cafes in Hua Hin that have chess boards and clocks?

Dont think I'll be going on any trips out of Hua Hin this time as my stay might be short. Will be back on the 27th and thinking I'll buy a chess board to bring down there. Or has anybody seen chess boards for sale in Hua Hin lately?

The game of chess can be played for this reason at the Nung bar, but forget about the clocks. Don't know about the backgammon over there, but played it at the Nice and Easy before. What i'm looking for is an unformal setting where you could just drop in for a beer or 10 and play some blitz games (they tend to get funnier the larger your beer handicap until the point where it's just a mess).
Yung,
Greetings and have fun,

Many thanx Dr. Dave for the compliment (I hope).
I actually do have a backgammon set here in Hua Hin, which is itching to be used again. As for Chess I will e-mail my next door neighbour who is due to be returning from UK very soon and get him to pick up a couple of cheap ones from Smiths. Clocks are a bit more specialist. I will ask my brother who, very saddly for him lives in London. Maybe I can get a couple sent over. (probably manufactured in China). Most modern mobile phones have a stopwatch function whic may be usable. In Thailand improvisation is next to godliness.
The subtle way to do this is to email me and we can arrange something.
Additionally you might want to check out All in Hua Hin. There used to be a notice on the wall by someone who was loking for a Chess partner.
