Having just read an interesting thread on here with a number of well put and very valid points, as well as some complete rubbish, I would like to ask the question from Thai posters. I look forward to the feedback and will hopefully learn something from it.

How do you perceive foreigners ?
Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
You will have problems to get an honest answer. Thais are not used to say directly what they think, especially if it could be offending to someone.

Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
Four days on and still no response from Thai posters - starting to look as though Pitsch is right! But I'm surprised that the Understudy at least hasn't commented. Maybe worth re-wording the question Crazy? It isn't immediately clear which 'foreigners' the Q is aimed at.

A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
Crazy 88 not married to a Thai then?? You would be able to answer the Q rather easily albeit from a different paradigm and thought process (see Pitsch comment).
Anyway how would you know the potential posters are Thai???

Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
Not married to a Thai national but will be in the very near future.
I have lived and worked amongst Thai people for the last 15 years or so and have a number of close Thai friends. I take Pitsch point but think that perhaps a web forum would help alleviate the cultural barrier of potentially causing offense as it is anonymous. I take MC point also and will start with English and European, US and Australian. It would also be good to know if the experience of foreigners is based on domestic tourists, expats or having lived abroad etc. As for knowing if the posters are Thai I can only hope that no Trolls pretend to be so.

At first sign Thai will think foreigners(only Farang) smart, good looking, wealth
but after that it's up to your habit.
Ps. I am Thai

Thanks Seosaro!! Always great to get a Thai point of view.seosaro wrote:At first sign Thai will think foreigners(only Farang) smart, good looking, wealth

I must admit I've been treated better overall in Thailand than I get here in the states!
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.
Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
I have asked this to many thai girls, the first thing they think is Farang = ATM.
When you go out they expect you to pay for everything, even if some thai men join the party. Then i asked a friend of mine and she said that they expect the farang to pay for everything but normally when they stay with thai people they will share the bill and split it, with girls or mens in the same group. If a farang join the group they will wait him to pay for everything and ask him to do so. She said that if someone has money he should pay for others. Farang are considered as rich automaticly, she also said that rich thai men is expected to pay too, like a farang, even a rich thai girl should pay for the group.
Have some exceptions for sure, but this is from my experience. That's why i prefer to limit my thai friends, i want to be sure they really want to be my friends and not only expects me to pay for them. I had some good experiences too, but it's like 20% good and 80% bad.
I believe that is because we are considered as rich automaticly that they will act like this, and yes we normally have more money than thai people (not everytime). I personnally don't like this, if i need to pay for everyone i will loss my money, i prefer use it for usefull things.

Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
I can only speak from my own experience on this.
I would say it very much depends on the Thai persons standing and financial situation, your personal standing and the competibility between them.
How well you know each other also plays a factor.
I have had ongoing relations with Thais from various backgrounds.
- I have gone out for drinks with Thais who would simply not open the tab when it came or would even pull a shinobi. In these cases I would pay the bill and not join them in the future.
- I have been invited over for drinks by Thais who do not have a lot of money to throw around and when we would go to supply the party would let me decide how much I would be willing to buy. If I would buy what they would feel is too much, they would express themselves or ask me for a valid explanation (I have used that I have had a good day, I plan to stay a long time, or I plan to drink a lot myself tonight).
- I have gone out for drinks with a group of Thais, men and women, of average wealth. Some of them I had known for a longer period, sometimes I would meet a new face. At the end of the night they would simply say the price on the bill out loud and everybody chipped in a roughly equal amount.
- I have gone out or dined out with Thais who are company owners or hold a higher then average standing and I would never be allowed to pay. Depending from person to person, I feel some do it because they don't care and possibly actually like me there (for as far as I can tell), others because they are obviously older then me and others to show that they can. As the relation endures, they will become more flexible in this and allow me to pay or share.
I would like to ad that similar situations could go down in my own country.
I feel it is very hard to generalize how Thais see you, since every person is different.

Re: How do you perceive foreigners ?
The majority see us as rich people, so the majority of the time we will need to pay the bills. That's very simple. If they believe you don't have money you will just share like them. Happened sometimes to me as i look young. The richest guy "the boss" should pay the bill, if everyone is poor they share.
As i'm most of the time the richest guy i prefer to stay at home, i'm not going to pay bills for people to drink.
Some thai poor guys will join the party even if you don't know them as you will pay the bill. They can even ask you to buy something for them at 7/11. These people are like parasites and i hate them.
In my country i don't really know how it is, but for what i heard, everybody share the bill. But that's for people who are in the same situation, so it's just like Thailand. I believe if you go out with rich people in France they could pay all the bills too, but i don't know any.
