Oysters

Post by migrant »

Another of the many food items I like are oysters.

I've seen them on menus in Thailand, but avoided them thinking the environment, handling, heat, etc will cause problems since I like them raw and cold.

Than I ran across articles about oyster farming in the gulf of Thailand, and many different restaurants serving them.

Soooooo Any good, or bad, reports around Hua Hin?

My GF eats oysters often and I have also had them many times over the years with no ill effect.

They are farmed, for example, in the Chonburi and Pattaya areas and obtained more naturally from Phuket and the surrounding islands and also south of Chanthaburi towards Trat.

I've also never had a problem with oysters here. My wife quite often buys them at one of the day markets on the canal road for next to nothing. They come already shelled.
Eaten raw, with that herb similar to tarragon, a twist of lime juice and some chili dip if you want and they're delicious.
I've no idea where they come from but the information is probably above anyway.

There are plenty of the baby oyster variety around Paknampran - we buy them often and they're delicious.

Big oysters are also available at the seafood restaurants here.

About the biggest and best oysters I've ever seen or eaten, though, were in the Chompon area.

That's good to hear. I would say any place between Sattahip and Chanthaburi would be suspect due to industry. Local mussels are already being avoided and advised by the authorities not to consume.

It's interesting that you mention Trat as if you look at Google earth there are miles and miles of what I thought were shrimp farming pens along that coast. Not too much beach in that area, only cliffs and stone meeting sea. Thinking about it, it may be unusual to have fresh water shrimp raised so close to salt water, so perhaps those pens are oyster farms. I don't think Thailand farms sea shrimp, but I could be wrong.
