Re: not girly bars
If it is just for a quiet drink, and you need to keep well away from Bintablock, then there are some on Sra Song, near the Night Market, and a couple of the places along the night market itself might suit. Most (if not all) of the bars in Khao Takiab and on Takiab Road running past the flyover are 'hostess' free. Several places in and around Sois 88-94 are hostess free. Most of the bars on the top end of the block, near to (and including) the Hilton are pretty safe if you are prepared to venture into the general area of downtown. Some on Soi 80 are quite acceptable.

Buffalo tavern is a good bet in the centre of town.

On this front I would highly recommend Thaiwaii, run by a very hospitable American.Korkenzieher wrote:If it is just for a quiet drink, and you need to keep well away from Bintablock

If you want in town, Buffalo Bills, O'neils of El Murphy's (all do good food).
Khao Takiab for a lot quieter bars - Boulevard, Oasis, Lost Cafe, Bob'n'Noks, Beach Hut (working girl free but not always that quiet

No disagreement with any of those choices, except of course where it means walking though the Sois in town (Eg Murphs), as that might not suit the OP's requirement. Just wasn't sure whether I should name names!
Thaiwai on 80, and Dicks Office. The new Thai Bistro on 88 is OK, and not far from Monicas. Also in the same general area is the Railway, which usually has a decent conversation going on about something (or more likely nothing). All the Takiab outlets you mention would have been in the list too.

I've always found Johnnie Walkers to be family friendly.

I second O'neils, though it's within sight of the girly area. The best imo as they have good choices and it's a good place in the (non-girlie) tourist area to sit and watch the world go by is the Mai Tai just a few doors south of the Hilton.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: not girly bars
Try the Moon Corner Bar near the train station. Walk just about 20 meters beyond the 7 11.
Small friendly open air bar also serves Thai and Issan food.

Don't be so sure. My mother objected simply to having to sit on a stool next to a bar in the UK! "I am not accustomed to propping up bars...".
