AC/DC playing at El Murphy's

Post by buksida »

Not really but 'Cartoon' and the local band in there do top notch covers. One of the rare occasions that I actually ventured into town was rewarded by some great live rock and roll so I'm going to give them a plug just for that: http://www.huahinmedia.com/elmurphys.php

It was also packed ... unlike a lot of the other forlorn looking bars around the block that are too scared to even put on a Rolling Stones CD.

Certainly one of the best cover bands I've heard anywhere, much less in Hua Hin. I know Murf has guests upstairs but I wish he'd let 'em turn it up on weekends. I can't figure out why they have (or had - I got to where I couldn't stand to go) such an _awful_ band at the Hilton, when Cartoon and the SHB is playing just around the corner. Kudos to both them and Murf. When I first came to Hua Hin, they were playing in the now defunct Butterfly Rock, often to an audience of one - me.

Certainly the best live R&R I've heard in HH and worth a visit. The first set's usually slower, quieter stuff, but the second set usually rocks but won't make your ears bleed (because of aforementioned guests upstairs).

One small criticism for those who can't stand praise - Cartoon's vocals can be a little weak sometimes. Okay. He knows that. But damn, he can play guitar and has a very tight band.

Always worth a listen, and Murf's staff is competent and pleasant. I don't usually make such gushing endorsements but they are really good.

What time's and which nights do they play? I looked at the link but it didn't seem to have details unless I missed them... in fact it mentioned a different band and it had an ad for an event coming in 2009! I think Murf (or Hua Hin media) needs to update the web page.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Toon is performing every night, if he was to really let rip, his voice would not last!

I want to add my praise for the Stonehead Band and Toon....not only are they excellent musicians, but they are also really decent blokes as well.

Toon and the lads fall over themselves to be good at what they do, and will learn new songs on request. I asked em for a New Model Army one once....Toon learned how to do the violin part on his guitar so they could play it!.

do em a favour and stick your small notes in their tip box
- support good music.

Eddys place is a good example of how a good business runs - good quality environment, good food, great entertainment (live and multi screen TVs) and well run. He's spent a wodge of dosh and a lot of thought getting the place up and running, and runs a pretty tight ship.

Kudos to him and he deserves every ounce of success he gets.

The band that was in the disco. I don't think I've been there for eighteen months or more. GF has friends visit and I would occasionally have to accompany them to the Hilton - older ladies reliving their glory days I guess - last few times I have begged off because I couldn't stand the music. My impression on hearing the band was 'man, they suck'. Then I noticed people only danced during the band's breaks, when a dj would take over. Seems like management might have noticed that, too. They may have a better band by now - I'm old and do lose track of time. I didn't realize how long it had been since I'd been to the disco until I was writing this reply.

Can't comment on the lounge bar at all as the one time I was there, ages ago, there was no music. I like almost all kinds of music, so if the lounge band is good, I'll try to have a listen within the next month or so. Guess I'll have to dress up...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleive that after 9pm, all drinks are served with a 20 baht surcharge. The surcharge goes exclusively to the band...something like a compulsory tip.

Cartoon and the lads are just great. I'm there 2, 3 or 4 times a year and Murphy's is always my focal point.

The last set in particular is my type of music - and to hear them play Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", NIB and Paranoid as well as "Keep on Rockin in the free world" really get me going.

And a previous poster is right - they will sometimes learn new music on request. As regulars will know, Cartoon and the band love Deep Purple (their version of Smoke on the Water is fantastic) so I sent him the track and lyrics to "Perfect Strangers" and the next time I went to HH they played it. Brilliant.

I often meet Cartoon after they've fnished their gig - always a great time.

Agree with sandman, Eddy spent a lot of money to make a venue suitable for drinkin/eatin/watching sport and live music - he has done very well.
The band have given so many people wo live here and who holiday great nights for many years and deserve all the praise they get - great guys and very talented musicians. :thumb:

Re current schedule, the band gets Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, but can be found on Tuesdays at the Souay Vista Social Club on Soi 94, about 1 km off Petchkasem. Ref The Hua Hin Arts Guide, http://huahinartsguide.com/current/tuesday-05-october/

I keep hearing and reading how good El Murphy's is, but I keep not seeing it. I give big thumbs up to the environment, # and quality of TVs, variety of sports playing on the TVs.

I give big thumbs down to the food and the service. I still go for a drink and TV sports but I'm done with their kitchen and wait staff, except for an occasional breakfast. I've eaten there about four times (not counting breakfast) because I like food with my sports and I keep thinking the bad experience I had last time must have been a fluke. Problems on these four occasions included:
* It takes 30 - 45 minutes from order to have food delivered. I expect that's because they want to sell at least two drinks to their customers.
* Ordered Thai food once. The veggies were so overcooked that I can only guess that the cook has never heard the phrase 'al dente', or that he comes from a culture who's cuisine is legendary for it's bad food.
* Tried a cheese burger. That's a hard dish to screw up, but they did. There was so little cheese, I literally had to disassemble the sandwich to see if it actually had cheese. I'd bet this was intentional, given the price of cheese in Thailand. The worse part was the side dish of cole slaw. The taste was fine, but it was plopped right on the plate so the dressing flowed downhill and turned the bottom of one half of the hamburger into a soggy mess. That's the sort of mistake usually only made by total amateurs.
* Twice got an incorrect bill. Both times it was for items similar to what I ordered and for more than what I should have paid. Waitress apologized and corrected the problem immediately.
* The wait staff must have trained in America. That's the only explanation I can think of for walking by customers and not looking at them.

Hi Homer, mate i am sure if you talk to Eddy if you have any problems he would sort it out, The team there bend over backwards to serve me. I go there a bit and never have any problems. As for staff, well they change often so you may have just hit a bad day or 2. And if you don't say anything how would anyone know. Hopefully ill see you there again?
