Cameron coming on holiday

Post by PeteC »

I wonder what he paid for his airfare, or does he have a government jet? He may just surprise everyone and end up in Hua Hin instead of Phuket. Pete

UK prime minister is coming to town
By UK media

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron is planning to spend the Christmas period in Thailand with his family at the invitation of his old pal from Eton, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

A Thai source said: 'I believe he is travelling to Bangkok at the end of this year around Christmas time and he's going to spend some time in Bangkok and some time at one of our beaches.'

Cameron and Abhisit were contemporaries at Eton College and Oxford, and Thai newspaper reports claim the pair have been 'buddies' ever since.

There's speculation as to Cameron and his family's itinerary, with the Phuket media in particular claiming he is likely to include a stay on one of the island's resorts, perhaps at the Amanpuri on the west coast, where various UK celebrities have chosen to hang out in the past, though the most likely choice would be Sri Panwa or Amanpuri, which are both headland resorts, a good choice for security reasons.

But UK human rights campaigners called on him to rethink as the country is in the grip of a controversial security crackdown. A recent Amnesty International report also raised concerns about torture. Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn said: "He should think very carefully about the message he is sending."

Abhisit has a beach house in HH doesn't he? Would make sense as the gunboats are already in place anyway. I'm just sorry I'll miss the chance for a good old demo.

All the same these people are caught between the devil and the deep blue when it comes to foreign travel. The media will find problems with any destination.

(BTW - who's paying for the hol for the 4 of them?) :naughty:

Canceled in case you haven't seen it in the news yet. Conflicting stories. Thai version: "...complaints from campaigners about the Thai government's human rights record". UK version: "...it was thought that the electorate would not look favourably on what was perceived as an expensive holiday at a time of austerity in the UK." Pete

He was paying for the holiday himself but the cost of security was for the UK taxpayer, hence the cancellation.

Can't see any UK politicians travelling abroad...same for Mr. Obama and family after Michelle went to Spain.

I think his trip was postponed due to the bad weather in the UK - now things are getting back to normal, I suspect it'll be back on at some point.

If he did come to the LoS, he would probably be expected to pay a brief courtesy visit to the King.

Is the King in Bkk or HH now?

Thought it was due to the fact Cameron would pay for the holiday but the Brit tax payer would pay for security
