Interesting one - I can't remember ever seeing gravel used in gardens in the LOS like it is in the UK. Nor have I ever seen it for sale, even at garden centre places.
So I'm thinking is there a reason? First - if laying gravel on soil - you would also need the weed supressing liner. Is that available? Second - how would gravel stand up to the rains? I could imagine weeds shooting through regardless after a good rain - and if a non porous liner was used you could end up with a gravel pond.
Hopefully someone will come along who has found gravel and can comment on it's practicality. But if you want to cover a bare patch easily and with low maintainance the Thais often let a low growing ground cover plant take the place of grass. Don't know what it is - looks a bit like a flat dandelion without the flower stalks!

Gravel was probably the wrong term stone chippings more like it, seen used lots in thailand along with larger stones must admit mainly on farang gardens,as you say good ground cover plant may be answer cheers.

I would imagine pretty much any build merchant or garden centre could order by the M3 or ton with the coloured stones. Never used it in those quantities though so I could be wrong. You can get the stones you use on driveways by the truckload. The green or black mesh doubled over seems to keep out all but a few weeds.
