Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
Over the years, the number of kite surfers on Hua Hin beach has increased at a fast pace. I'm all for the beach for being for everyone, but its reached a point where they now occupy the majority of the beach and the sea! Its almost made going for a swim a hazard with the real possibility of being clobbered by one of the surfers boards.
I think the Hua Hin local gov should do something about this and section off a particular spot for surfing only. I will be writing to the relevant offices suggesting this.

Re: Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
Must admit that I enjoy walking the beach, but before Xmas when the tide was high (and it may still be) there was hardly any room to walk without bumping into them every 10 yards from south of the Marriott.
Like the OP, I'm for everyone being able to enjoy the sand, but it can be dangerous. A couple of times I've had the sail thump into the beach not too far from where I'm walking. Wouldn't want one of those landing on me.

Re: Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
One day I was sat in the small cafe below the Hilton when one of those kite surfers lost control a bit and ended up down past the sea-food piers.
I was hoping he was going to stray into the Palace exclusion zone so that they could have engaged him with one of those warships that loaf about off the coast but he made it ashore and was rescued by a guy on motorbike.

Interesting first post. Sounds like one from somewhere else.

Yes was my first post, if sounds like something else then perhaps there is enough concerned residents/visitors to get a petition together. I'll setup an online one - Moderator : can I post the link here?

The software security system won't allow it until you've made ten posts so email it to us and we'll post it.

Beware the Kite Surfers? First you have to survive the horses ... I agree that for security reasons it would be reasonable to give them a designated zone. But same shall be true for the horses. Next it becomes little Daytona Beach with cars driving allowed.
Having said that I still feel tempted to try Kite Surfing myself.

If you want a stretch of empty beach to walk or sit on go into Suan Song military area. After crossing the railroad tracks turn right (away from the normal beach/restaurant area and golf course) and drive past the 5 story hotel and make an immediate left. Just on your right south of the hotel you will see a big dirt/gravel parking lot. Park there and walk through the pine woods to the beach; then walk south all the way to Kao Tao if you want and you will see maybe four other people and no (and I mean "0" dogs). The beach is clean and beautiful and the shore is lined with military housing for Generals (really nice beach houses).
My neighbor asked me to walk his giant German Sheppard a couple of times a week while he is in vacation and I've been going to this area because I didn't want to walk him on a leash and I didn't want to worry about other people or soi dogs. It has been perfect. I have seen some (one actually) kite surfers off in the distance south towards Kao Tao on one of the walks but it was a long way from my starting point so I didn't get that far. There are no restaurants or umbrellas or anything else as this is a military area so if you're going for a long walk bring your own water.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Kite surfers have a designated zone where they can't go. Extends south from the palace, past the Hilton to some tower/hotel I forget the name of. I've seen maps of it where the soi meets the beach in front of kite schools. People who don't want to be around kites can go there.
The other solution is to carry a hard, floating object with good aerodynamics that can be thrown at kites surfers who get too close and a box cutter for use when the kite thuds down next to you.

I have to say that I walked the beach this morning for the first time since before Xmas and there seemed to be fewer schools set up on the beach and definitely far fewer kiteboarders.
Roll on another month or so and I'll be able to make it to Khao Takieb. At the moment, the tide's too high south of Chiva Som.

Re: Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
I noticed over Christmas that there were far fewer kite surfers about than the last time I was out when there seemed to be hundreds of them.
I know nothing about the sport, so I don't know if different winds, or high tides, or anything of that nature have anything to do with the numbers.
It seems a harmless enough activity as long as they're kept seperate from bathers and the beachs south of PaknamPran where there are some kite schools seem ideal for the purpose as they're generally empty.

I think the Hua Hin Taliban nabbed a load of them for work permits.lomuamart wrote:I have to say that I walked the beach this morning for the first time since before Xmas and there seemed to be fewer schools set up on the beach and definitely far fewer kiteboarders.
A cordoned off area for them would be good, and another one for those idiots on jetskis the other side of Monkey Mountain where kids are playing in the sea.

Re: Beach Invasion By Kite Surfers
I walked down the beach a coulpa yrs ago, the Kite-Surfers took up so much beach-area as well as dominating the sea. I took an instant dislike to them there and then when I got in the way of a 'dude' doing some practice moves on-land, and got a mouthful of Aussie abuse from him..I more than matched his verbal offerings with my full-on reply.
May see the same 'guy' this week when I attend HHAD's party..they all 'hang-out' in the bar next to JW's don't they?
