2 snakes in 2 days

Post by fach3003 »

Hi all
must be snake season or something...
my picture is 700Kib the limit is 200
im abit dim when it comes to computers!
so im struggling to upload it...
Anyways snake 1 according to the mother in law
was a baby cobra 1ft long...boy could it move..

the next night there was a snake curled up in the corner
fair bit bigger...it was 2ft tan brown with darker brown
triangles along it two triangles were pointing at each other
slightly off set....

i know i know picture would help....

but i had a looky see at the thai snake sites...
look exactly the Malysan pit viper..
it certainly didnt run away and
arched up to strike as we set about it....

Are they common??? or is there lookalikes that are harmless???
either way its brown bread...

Hope your all ok out there

The Malayan pit viper is highly venomous so avoid at all costs!

1 ft long?

You should've smothered it with a flip flop and stuck it into a bottle of Chang!

Malayan Pit Vipers are very common and yes, that is their behavior. Unlike Cobras, who will run (i guess that would be slither, and yes, they are very fast) unless cornered, Malayan Pit Vipers sit under a bush or in a semi protected area in a coil waiting for prey to come by and they will not move easily. I have poked them with a stick and all they did is strike at it instead of trying to get away. I must have seen 30 of them in my years living here and I've yet to see one uncoiled. The good news is, since they stand their ground in that coil it is very easy to use a garden implement such as a hoe to dispatch them.

I really have nothing against snakes and would hesitate to kill one if it were not for my wife working in the yard a lot and of course my two fearless dogs. Better the snake than one of them. I've sent many a pit viper to snake heaven. By far the scariest incident though was with a spitting cobra... got the dogs in the eyes and was taking aim at me just as I chopped him.

I posted a photo of a Malayan Pit Viper on this thread in the usual pose I find them in:

I recently rented a typical, old townhouse on Soi 80, and a week after I moved in, I had a snake in the kitchen. <sigh...>

The kitchen is actually an add-on to the back of the townhouse, and the roof tiles have (had!) lots of gaps. There is a tokay that serenades me at night, and I think it's between the roof tiles and the flashing, as it echoes quite loudly. I suspect the snake -- identified as a green tree ("flying") snake -- was looking for the tokay(s).

I spent a busy day or two filling as many roof gaps as I could with expanding foam. The particular area where the snake entered and left I had to stuff with newspapers as it was too big, and too vertical (straight up) for foam.

Oddly, though I am typically terrified of snakes, I wasn't scared of this guy at all. My reaction was only, "Great. Now get out!"

My greatest concern was that if this non-dangerous snake could find its way in, what about *dangerous* ones finding their way in?

I really don't see the problem.
You choose to live in Thailand.
You also should know that snakes live here.
Why not try to learn something about the real inhabitants of Thailand?

If a one foot snake, whatever type, is enough to make you sit down in a corner shivering, then I very humbly tell you to learn more about these beautiful and helpful creatures.

The snakes have the right to live here, just like you and me, but they don't know anything about properties, borders and human behaviour.

It is NOT difficult to handle a poisonous snake if you have been trained to do so.
The most important thing you have to learn is;
What kind of snake is it? That means, read and learn.
How do I catch it? Read and learn.

If you still don't have a clue, go to the Thai Red Cross Institute on Rama IV Road in Bangkok and let them teach you how to do it.

Hiya
i will follow the guide plus also get it resized....

Snake 1 ...1ft long got the rake...then a beating stick

It was 1am and i was asleep the missus said there was
a snake outside the door i thought she was joking
as a few days before whilst clearing the land up the
side she threw a piece of rope at me and said snake!

Anyhow the kids were running around scared and
pushed the youngest over the two puppies did
a runner...the missus hid inside
i just pinned it down after it tried to flee...
and the mother in law clubbed it....
i had a man tab afterwards.. :D

Snake 2 The viper...a bit over 2ft
This was just discovered on the evening inside the gates
against the side wall it was coiled up with it head on top
I had a feeling looking at it was a bad one
i pinned it down (bamboo stick)and made sure
it couldnt get away...mid body
it striked out several times...
i stood on the bamboo and
set about it head with the heavy hue...
not taking any chances with any snake here....

So that 2 in snake heaven...

My son is coming to 3 years and not afraid of them
im trying to make him understand to run away
and tell us...etc etc...

Right ill be patient and try to sort this dam pic out!

cheers again

Christ, I hope the snake was reasonably big if it was looking for the satan lizard or it'd get savaged.

I've got one in my roof, I think it took a minor bird out.
