Dog Breeder Wanted

Post by DAVYCHEZ »

Hi,

Does anyone know of a dog breeder in or around Hua Hin? We are looking for either German Shepherd, dalmation, labrador or similar size?
Cheers :D

If you're not that worried whether it's a 100% pedigree (always a problem in Thailand), then may be a trip up to the the temple near the Elephant Village (Pala U Road) might be a good bet. A friend of mine had to take a stray dog there, and he said that they had some beautiful dogs living at the temple.

They always have puppies, and a quick look at their paws will indicate how big the dog will eventually grow.

We had a Thai dog a few years ago and he was about the size of a Labrador. The friendliest house dog and best guard dog I've ever owned. A part, or 100%, Thai dog will be far more resilient to all the nasty bacteria and diseases than a (probably) poorly bred pedigree.

Just a thought...

VS

P.S. Dalmations are pretty, but, in my opinion, one of the most stupid, air-headed dogs on the planet.

VS spot on! Also Shepherds prone to hip dysplasia and labs are better and more suited to cooler climates. Have seen pups (small breeds) in the night market next to Sao Paolo Hosp. Personally I would get something that seems to have survived the trip to date !

Quite agree, VS; sort of like a canine Essex blon- oops! :run:

Davy, VS is quite right about Thai dogs. They have the added advantage of being free.

We bought our dogs from the Grand night market, there is a breeder there who has bred dogs for The King. One of them was a bit poorly at first, but with good veterinary treatment he pulled through. They are now 7 years old and have never had a problem with them.

VS.....you really do have true wisdom. I've owned many breeds, and none of them have ever annoyed me and irritated me as much as my Dalmatian. Don't get me wrong, my one is a very lovable dog, and wins the heart of all who meet her, but after having a breed like Dobermans, and and also various other breeds, buying a Dalmatian was a huge mistake.

OP, if you would like to adopt a Dalmatian that's been cut and had all shots, you're welcome.....just PM me. If you meet her you'll love her, but in my books, she would do best as an only dog. Purebred but no papers, and has never yet been ill.

jj001: still not all that familiar with the area, is the Grand night market the normal tourist market downtown or is there another one?
I know it's a silly question but we don't move over permanently until December so still trying to 'find our feet'.

'As OK, DM. 'cos I cum from sleeeepy Suffolk, innit?

As far as buying a pedigree dog from a stall holder at the Grand Hotel Market, I'd certainly be highly suspicious of the quality (and pedigree quantity) of it. The fact that the King adopted a soi dog (Tong Daeng), and publicly promoted in one of his speeches that Thai dogs are the best dogs to have, puts the stall holder's claims into a kind of cloudy area.

Davychez: If you're really determined to get a pure breed, then don't buy from a temporary market. You need to meet the mother of the dog and have a look at the breeding conditions. Some poor pedigree that's subjected to ejecting as many pups as possible isn't a good bet. The fact that jj001 had vets bills to pay says it all.

Our lovely Thai dog (that we sadly lost) was admired by the local Thais who would often ask us what breed he was. He looked so strong and healthy because of a good balanced diet, that he didn't resemble the average local dog. HHF posted some lovely photos of his handsome 'free' dogs. Take a browse before you make your decision.

We've found this as well, we have three Thai strays that we were given as puppies and two of them have grown into quite large and powerful dogs just from being kept healthy and having plenty of food and exercise. (The third I assume is from smaller parents.)
The locals in the village often ask where we bought them and are surprised when told that they're village dogs the same as everyone elses.
If you want something that looks presentable, it's quite easy to find Thai mongrels that look something like golden retrievers although slightly smaller.

Gone but not forgotten, VS - a lovely chap.
I remember being quite shocked at how dogs could flourish on rice and leftovers. I'm surprised tinned dog food has a market here at all.
