Our experiance two years ago in Hua Hin, there was quite a strong wind and after buying Kratongs and geting a couple of beers out of the Seven Eleven and walking down the beach road there where many Thai's walking back with theirs un launched.
On our little walk about it was buzzing but the sea was far to rough and blowing towards the shore so a compleate waste of time, we put our two Krotongs in a big sort of puddle next to the rocks and then got some satay skewers of chicken and watched the beauty contest  seen one seen them all  .

Now i would love to see this on a river but this in our lovely Hua Hin was pants in my opinion but i have never seen the place sooo busy.

kendo.

The last couple of years we've gone down to Pranburi where they have a big celebration on the river... much better than going to the ocean. It gets crowded and parking is a hassle, but it's worth it if you want to experience a more authentic Loy Kratong.

Directions and further comments in the thread that Pete posted above.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Got to say I found the main beach a little disappointing compared to what I am used to. Very crowded. Loy Kratong is my favourite Thai festival. This year it falls on the eve of my partners birthday so we have booked to go on a dinner cruise on the Pranburi river. We have been on the boat a number of times, There is nothing else like it for a special occasion in this area. Decked out like a chic cocktail lounge, electric, so silent and no fuel fumes. Food is fantastic with a huge variety every time we have been.

Plan is to leave the dock at 4pm and cruise down the river to the bay where we can swim, fish and generally have fun for a couple of hours before a sunset cruise back up the river, then stop for dinner, music, dancing (all on the boat) They pick you up and drop you off so you can let your hair down without thinking about the drive  Welcome cocktails and environmentally friendly Kratongs for each person included . There are a few spaces left if anyone wants to join for a trip that I am sure Barry, Tan and the crew will make a fantastic evening of as always. Missed the dragon boat racing trip today so really looking forward. huahincruses.com they are a sponsor on here or you can call Bee on 0816153613 bee@huahincruses.com for more details.

Ok, just go ahead and take the small bit of fun away from these suffering people. These spokespersons should team up with Vital Spark's university spokesperson that Burmese kids are too stupid to learn English. Nanny government at its best! :banghead: Pete

'Flood waters not for krathongs'

'Flood waters not for krathongs'
Authorities have warned Bangkok residents against floating their krathongs in flood water.

Krathongs are decorative floats that Thais have for centuries floated on the night of Loy Krathong, one of the country's most colourful festivals. This year, the Loy Krathong festival falls tomorrow.

However, millions of Bangkok residents are now surrounded by flood water and many may be tempted to launch their floats in front of their inundated homes, a move that many agencies fear could cause fire.

People usually light candles on their krathongs.

"If your floats get trapped in a house and cause fire, you will face legal action," Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj-General Amnuay Nimmano warned.

He said revellers should strictly float their krathongs in prepared areas only.

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) would open unaffected public parks for the Loy Krathong festival so that people could celebrate a centuries-old tradition.

According to a senior BMA official, up to 16 public parks will be open for the Loy Krathong Festival, including Lumpini, Benjakiti and Benjasiri parks.

"Don't float krathongs from your flooded houses as that might cause fires," Sukhumbhand warned.

He also advised people against floating krathongs in the Chao Phraya River and canals with strong currents.

"It can be dangerous," the governor warned.

Is the above a photo of Barry's silent running battery/solar powered boat? Pete

That's a big boat for such a propulsion system. For some reason looking at Barry's web site before I though it much smaller. Anyway, I would think it has a little putt-putt small HP in it in case of emergencies? Pete

( Crazy 88 you really missed out ! )
The Suncat was moored so you could see the start and finish..
What a great day out!!!

Fantastic atmosphere...really exciting...the thai crowds were going wild !!

The main reason im posting is that all credit is due to Mermaid Cruises
(Barry ,Tan and Staff ) for hosting such a special day out....
Huge Thank you! :D

The Suncat is an impressive Boat ,the food lovely , staff very friendly and
the on board bar prices not expensive…

The whole day was just spot on….

On the back of yesterday we have booked for Loy Kratong (Tomorrow)...

They will face legal action, but presumably only if they pin their contact details to the krathong...
This is the way

As a contrast, I attended the Bristol Loy Krathong Festival here in the UK. The event was an overwhelming success in that it raised £20K for Thailand's flood victims. Because the festival took part in a (large) church hall, I thought I'd post a couple of photos of vast lake we had at our disposal to float the krathongs:
