Can't help you with the PC, but a word of caution - even in Thailand, you tend to get what you pay for.
This is the way
Re: desktop PC wanted
PC prices are so cheap nowadays that it really isn't worth wasting time and money on a used one that could go wrong at any moment and will have no warranty.

Re: desktop PC wanted
I've always used Ton at IT-net on soi 56, he will supply hardware the next day at Bangkok prices and always honours the warranties - more info: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16520nickswift wrote:ok thanks - any good shops to recommend in HH then?
InvadeIT are also good for specialist items such as high-end graphics cards, coolers or power supplies but from the sounds of your budget you wont be needing any of that.

My well used 5 year old laptop is starting to make the odd groan, so starting to think about buying a new desktop PC as a replacement. Don't really need the mobile aspect of the laptop these days and just thinking a desktop seems a far more solid option and you seem to get a lot more for your money. Checking out what's on offer even in Banana IT in Market Village and the top floor of the shopping mall, you seem to get desktops with decent processors, plenty storage and lots of RAM, for a lot less than equivalent laptops. I'm not up on current pricing but they look very cheap to me compared to several years ago.
Although I'm not sure exactly what you're getting in Thailand and some of them seem cobbled together, so the IT novice in me is a bit wary. I'm not into gaming and other than maybe watching the odd DVD, storing photos or storing/playing music, my needs are only internet access and the use of MS Office. Would the guy Ton at the IT-net shop on soi 56 be a better option than buying from one of the other more "recognised" stores?

Re: desktop PC wanted
Oh well, I tried the place on Soi 56 - it was around 9500b for a machine (no monitor) with 2g ram and 500mb HD.
Crazy how you can get something like this
http://www.ebuyer.com/283002-extra-valu ... -7873-1047
Intel Pentium DC G840 2.8GHz - Sandy Bridge, 3MB Cache
6GB RAM
1TB HDD
DVD writer
No Operating System
back in the UK for another 800b... I will keep looking, maybe a trip into Bangkok to see if can get a better deal.

Panthip Plaza is a good bet in bkk, mate. Second hand might be a good idea as hard disk prices have gone through the roof (globally) since the floods. If you get any problems with a second hand one I'll always be happy to lend a hand gettin it sorted.
Re: desktop PC wanted
Noz, the reason I use and recommend this store is because he always honours the warranties on parts whereas we've read about other stores in Hua Hin not doing so.
Hardware prices in Hua Hin have always been a bit above Bangkok anyway so as suggested you'll get the best value in Panthip.
That's about the going rate, you can double the RAM to 4GB for under 1,000 baht which puts it at a similar spec as the box you've listed. As mentioned above HDD prices have rocketed as Thailand supplies 40% of the world's drives and the factories are flooded.nickswift wrote:Oh well, I tried the place on Soi 56 - it was around 9500b for a machine (no monitor) with 2g ram and 500mb HD.

Yes, 9500b does seam to be the going rate - however, I decided to order from InvadeIT online - after I placed the order I had to organise delivery - when I looked at the address, it was actually in HH soi 3 - I could walk it if I wanted!
The machine was 5990b and has 2GB DDR3 Ram, 500MB HD, Intel Atom D425KT processor, DVD-RW and also a free KB and mouse. I picked up a 5 meter RJ45 cable for 100b and also a laptop lock for my other machine for 150b. Its a shop owned by a falang.
I don't think there are many left as he said I was lucky to pick one up as I have got one of the last HDs.
Very pleased with it.
