Yingluck criticised over English
Yingluck criticised over English
This happened a couple of days ago but the media is having a field day, originally reported in the WSJ was a critical article over the PM's address to Japanese investors:
http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2012 ... lood-plan/
The Thai govt responded with the usual defensive spiel:

I wonder if anyone up there realises that nobody outside of Thailand actually speaks Thai ...

What absolute nonsense
i would not expect david cameron sarkozy or merckel to go to any country and speak anything else but their own countries language
But to go so far as to criticise them for not speaking chinese because most of the audience were chinese THAI and more people speak chinese than any other language is ludicrous to the point of stupidity
This was THAI on JAPANESE no english at all
the fact there were no earphones and a simultaneous translation of her speech is hardly her fault (someone that organised it does want their arse kicking i agree)
To Blame her PERSONALLY just shows the depths certain elements in this country will slide down to to score a small point
It also shows she is winning if this is all they can come up with

I agree sarge, it is quite ridiculous how low the opposition will stoop, they just can't face up to the fact that they are totally unelectable in their present form and the only way they can gain power is through the barrel of a gun.

Totally endorse both Sarge's and Dozers' analysis!

Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

Dozer i agree
My personal standpoint on Thai politics is pretty simple
Before Thaksin i strongly believed that The Status Quo (the rich get obsceneley rich and the poor get obscenly poorer) had to change. NOT because i am a communist or even a socialist but because i am a realist and firmly believed it was unhealthy and the end result would be a lot of bloodshed (thats already happened) and worse a civil war was a probability Not a possibility.
Please note that was before Thaksin/TRT who represented that change
as a Brit conservative i would think the most able to run this country would also be the conservative side
I sincerely hope that the OLD GUARD yellow shirt/Padipat brigade get some brains in their ranks and wake up and realise they will not get voted back in unless they can show the people of Thailand they can and will stop the cronyism corruption and take action to while being the better party to create wealth will also close the obscene wealth gap between the High sos and the poor and spread the wealth FAIRLY
I do get very bored with the constant ludicrous propaganda spouted it is not helpfull for the country in any way or form it is presented
Thought:-even if they can create more wealth/inward investment why should the poor who wont see any of it (as they stand NOW) vote for them

Re: Yingluck criticised over English
Politics aside, it seems to be a complete non-story anyway; if the speech only lasted seven minutes and a printed translation was provided, surely any confusion could be cleared up after a brief read.
Re: Yingluck criticised over English
Okay, before everyone goes off the rails here, the article quoted has sweet bugger all to do with the opposition, and neither does it have anything to do with the yellows. It was in fact, printed by the WSJ.
I'm not for or against the PT government, but I also can't help but notice that they haven't really done much for the country since they were voted in. Workers are still earning the same or less than they were previously, kids haven't received their free netbooks, etc, etc, etc.

Funny how the same people start showing their true colours and salivating when the media has a dig at their Dear Leaders.
Nothing personal gents, you wouldn't expect a puppet to speak English either would you...

Re: Yingluck criticised over English
Many countries fail to see that English is the international language, even French politicians fail to see it and talk in French as if everyone understands it. Speaking in Thai outside of Thailand makes little sense really apart from making a political statement.
They harp on about speaking English in schools here in LOS is so important and that the clock is ticking regarding ASEAN in 2015, and the PM refuses to speak English on her international trips only send a confused and ambiguous message. She should be leading by example imo and then getting on their 'high horses' about it internally would carry more weight.
But that, of course, would be to sensible and we couldn't have that now, could we?
When she did this speech, then she's just gone and spoken to herself....bet she's got the feeling that some English teachers have at college/university in the first years.
