British man, wife murdered in Thap Sakae resort

Post by buksida »

BANGKOK: An elderly British man and his Thai wife were beaten to death in a suspected robbery at a beach resort in Thailand, police said Wednesday.

A worker at the resort in Thap Sakae district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, 280 kilometres (180 miles) south of Bangkok, found the badly beaten bodies of Michael Raymond, 68 and Suchada Baokhamdee, 52, Tuesday afternoon in their beach front bungalow.

"They were beaten with a chair and other hard objects," case officer Captain Winai Raila-aied told AFP by telephone.

The couple had checked in at the resort on the Gulf of Thailand a day earlier.

Police have begun questioning possible suspects who live nearby and are waiting for relatives of the couple to check what belongings are missing.

Winai said Raymond had lived in the northeastern Thai province of Khon Kean for two years since he got married.

What can I say? With all the bad press South Africa gets regarding the country's crime rate, I'm starting to think Thailand is not far behind. At least in South Africa most violent crime is essentially restricted to specific areas. This sort of thing definitely seems to be on the increase in Thailand, and unless a stop is put to it, it will only be a matter of time before they start seeing a drop in tourist numbers. May the perpetrators in this case were angry because Farang own 30% of the country. Now let's see what other drivel the government can come up with to bolster resentment against foreigners.

I know, we'll soon have a few responses to this thread that will want to blame economic hardship and etc, but no matter how poor one is, it's no reason to murder. I too grew up poor, but never resorted to crime, much less violent crime. And besides, those responsible will probably only spend the money on a new mobile phone, and copious amounts of cheap whiskey. Of course if they are ever caught, they'll get 10 years, and if they good little boys, they'll be out after five years, when in fact they should be

Crimes like this have nothing to do with financial suffering - they are the result of undisciplined youth, period, and a lack of a decent upbringing where moral standards are taught.

My condolences to the family of both victims

PHUKET: A British expat resident and his Thai wife were brutally murdered at a small Thai tourist resort for 200 baht and a mobile telephone, police said today.

Officers arrested the security guard, a chef and a local fisherman over the killing of Michael Raymond, 68, and his wife Suchada Bonkamdi, 52, early yesterday morning.

The fisherman told police that he heard noise coming from the couple's bungalow at the tiny resort in Prachuap Khiri Khan, south of Bangkok. He thought the couple must be making love and did not sound the alarm.

A maid went to the room yesterday at 3.30pm after the couple failed to appear.

The body of Mr Raymond, dressed only in brown shorts, was found near a sofa with his face and head savagely beaten. His wife, dressed only in a pink top, was found with similar wounds near the refrigerator.

Police believe the killers wanted cash but the couple only had 200 baht and a mobile telephone. The security guard and the cook have confessed but the fisherman denies involvement, officers said today.

A spokesperson for the Jack Beach Resort told Phuketwan today: ''We are shocked and horrified.

''This has always been a safe place. We have often left doors open, without fear of robbery. Now we will have to reassess the casual holiday way.''

The 17-bungalow resort on the Gulf of Thailand has been open for seven years.

The dead couple married about two years ago and had been living at Khon Kaen, not far from Bangkok, police believe. They had checked in just for the one night, the spokesperson said.

Police named the confessed killers as security guard Pongpitak Tapsawang, 29, and cook Prajak Maunjinka, 50. Fisherman Jakkarin Auyen, 30, so far denies involvement.

I hope they have the death penalty in this country for crimes such as this.

As a further comment to home owners/buyers. 90% of the burglaries and home invasion crimes I've heard about in Hua Hin in the last couple of years have involved the development security guard. My advice is to fire the guard if you have one and get an alarm and dogs. It seems to me that (not counting the police), development and resort security that are hired "for your protection" are involved in more crimes here than any other class or profession of people.

TAT issues statement regarding murder of British tourist and Thai wife
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is very shocked by yesterday’s news of the Briton murdered in the Thai southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan. Attacks like this are very rare in Thailand.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of both the victims, Michael Raymond and Suchada Bowkamdee, at this sad time,” commented Joanna Cooke, PR Manager for TAT UK.

“We have been informed by the Thai authorities that the three men involved have been arrested. This isolated incident is being investigated by the Royal Thai Police and the Foreign Office (FCO). TAT is unable to comment further,” she continued.

The Jack Beach Resort, where the incident happened, is located on Huay Yang beach in the district of Tub Sa Kae, which is approximately 30 miles from the holiday resort of Hua Hin.

The bodies of Michael Raymond, 68, and his wife, Suchada Baokhamdee, 52, were found by a housekeep in their bungalow on Tuesday afternoon, where police said they had been beaten to death with a chair and other blunt objects. Thai police captain Winai Raila-aied, the investigating officer, said the trio of killers had taken 2,000 baht (US$65), a mobile phone, and an ATM card from the couple’s room. Two of the killers were resort employees, one still on probation. All three confessed and have been arrested.

Hua Hin is popular with both Thai people and foreigners because of its close proximity to Bangkok. It is situated just 200 miles south of the capital city, a 3-hour transfer by road.

Thailand remains a safe holiday destination for visitors. Last year Thailand welcomed over 850,000 British travelers and 68 percent of those are repeat visitors.

Words fail me.
Thailand unfortunately wasn't "safe" for these two people and the trend in this "safe" country isn't exactly improving on the "safety" scale.
The security bloke was on parole?
Again, words fail me with this press release.
RIP.

Isn't this place down south of Prachuap Khiri Khan or is there another one?

Yes, I agree 100% - safety wise, Thailand is definitely not improving. To the best of my knowledge, more tourists and expats get murdered in Thailand than in South Africa, and that sure as hell says a lot, considering South Africa is or was known as the rape and murder capital of the world.

While I still feel safe in Thailand, I would no longer feel safe walking down a very quiet road late at night, whereas in the past I would have done so quite happily. It's a shame really, because if history is anything to go by, this trend is likely to get worse before it gets better.

HHF.......Thailand does still have the death penalty, also they seem to reserve it solely for drug dealers, while violent murder usually only entitles you to a max of ten years free accommodation. These three murderers should indeed be executed, and the executions should be broadcast on national TV, bang in the middle of prime soap opera time.

It seems Thailand is not as safe as I once thought; these are supposedly 2009 stats and I suspect it's not only gotten worse since then, I also suspect it is under reported in 3rd world countries:
