mother and 4 kittens on the roof...

Post by fft100 »

About 4 days ago a feral/soi cat deposited herself and 4 kittens on the terrace roof. It is hot up there, but she is under the overhang of the main roof, so out of the sun. The slope is very gradual, so no chance of falling off - though if they do walk the 5 metres down the terrace roof and fall off they would end up in the swimming pool !

I remember seeing mum a few times a week earlier, and she didnt look very fat - in fact, i now think that the kittens are a couple of weeks old at least and she moved them here after a problem.

I have been putting food and water up on the roof for them and mother has been staying around. milk, bread, tuna, chicken, car food, cat biscuit. A variety to try to ensure that mum has enough milk to feed the young ones.

I cant get to closer than 3-4 metres to them, so cant check (and it is gloomy where they are) for signs of fleas etc - though they do seem to twitch quite a bit, which doesnt seem like a good sign.

The big question is what do we do now ? It appears the options are just to carry on feeding them and wait for them to clear off, or try to adopt (but friends had cats killed by soi cats on the same street a few years ago), or ??? we have 2 very young children, so obviously issues there.

anyone any experience with this sort of thing ? Or, if anyone really does know there stuff, could they come round, have a look at them, and give some thoughts.

Drown them, a 25 kilo rice sack should do it with a lump of cat food inside it, that will get the mum in and then put the kittens in once mum is out of the way.

Gather a few large stones to weigh the bag down.

If you are lucky enough to have a car throw them in the boot and then turn the radio up a notch to drown out the whining.

Id opt for the pier down by the hilton but if a little busy head up towards the beach in pranburi where there should be less onlookers.

If you leave the bag in the sea most people will suspect a thai anyway as they like to throw shite everywhere.

Well, that was a positive and helpful post wasn't it, BingoBango?
If you don't like some of the animals that live here, start a new thread about it. Or basically be quiet if you've got nothing to offer except the above.
I very much doubt that the OP was looking for advice about ways to kill the animals

Tricky one this fft100. How are the kittens gonna get off your roof? At what stage does a kitten/young cat take on feral attitude..if it's being fed daily..?
Would you be able to catch them & bring them down..? (for the purpose of finding homes for them..we assume you only want a happy outcome from this dilema).
I hope some POSITIVE suggestions roll in for you...

But there was absolutely nothing humourous about your first post, BingoBango.

BB,

if you look at your posts on other threads, it appears you are a troll and have no purpose other than to get a reaction from others. Surprised you havnt been banned yet. Obviously the requirement for 10 posts to get into the night crawlers forum doesnt look at content ! The idea to end their lives quickly had occured to me, but the level of detail you decided to descend to removes you from any discussion.

They are all still alive, and mother hisses, spits and is quite aggressive if i poke my head over the roof and she is within 2 metres of me (i.e. eating the food i have put there). definitely no domestication there !

To answer one of the few reasonable posts above, i dont know what the end game is. Thats why i am looking for advice/help on this. Its outside my experience.

How high up are they fft? Cats can usually jump/fall from quite high and still land safely. The kittens are a different story though. One thing is for sure, while ever you are feeding them it is doubtful they will move on. Thats if you want them to move on? I hope this is of help. :)

I'm not sure how old the kittens are? Do they have eyes now, can they see? It's true that cats can fall from high places without getting hurt, they seem to have a sense that make them "fly" and land graciously.
My advice is that you keep on feeding them until the kittens are some 5 - 6 weeks old. Then, if you don't want to keep the feline family, simply stop feeding them. You could also reduce their portions gradually. After a little while they will get hungry and leave you in search of food elsewhere (although they may keep pestering you for a while until they realize that you stand firm).
Good luck to y'all.

I agree, as long as you keep feeding them, they'll stay. I'm sure someone on the forum once mentioned that they asked the fire brigade for help when in a similar situation, so perhaps you could try that approach.

Good luck

Had a good think about this in bed last night.

We have a 20 month old, so i dont think we can really take the risk of trying to adopt the kittens. If she was older i might take the risk.

The other issue with trying to adopt the kittens would be that we would need to remove the mother from the scene permanently.

I am not in favor of the kittens just wandering off with mother and becoming 4 more feral cats in the area. Their quality of life would not be good, and they would cause issues.

At the moment, the kittens cant get off the roof. Until they can jump 3 foot vertical distances up or 8+ feet down they are stuck - and the most likely place they can fall off is into the swimming pool ! It also means that no one can get to the kittens without going on the roof, and going via mother who is not keen on visitors - even ones with food :-)

They do seem to be doing ok. Dad is still around, and eating some of the food, which i am not impressed about, but cant do a lot to stop. He is big, but calmer, so wonder if he was domesticated at some point previously.

Unless an alternative comes forward, I am tending towards what may appear to be slightly bizarre (and slightly depressing), and that is feeding them well for the next few weeks, so they grow up happy, and then getting someone in to humanely put them down (mother + kittens). I wouldnt/couldnt do that, so it would need someone to come along and do it. I dont mean plastic bags, bricks or gas ovens. A needle or something else painless, for a quiet end. Anyone know who does that sort of thing ?

fyi, eyes appear to be open, and they are moving around a bit. I think they are all still alive.

My thai wife thinks that they are probably the luckiest cats in the world choosing our house to hang out.
