Bangkok Post Hua Hin Cricket Sixes

A presence once familiar but long since missing is about to make a return much to the delight of cricket fans in Thailand, and the stage it has chosen to announce its arrival is the six-a-side tournament in Hua Hin, where the teams this year will be vying for the Bangkok Post Trophy.

The 17th edition of the tournament this year, billed as the Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Cricket Sixes, runs April 7-11, and more than anything else it is a signal of renewal of the Bangkok Post's ties with a game it has championed since the very advent of the Thailand Cricket League where teams, particularly in the 25- and 40-over formats, used to compete for the Bangkok Post Trophy. These matches mostly played at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) and the Polo Club were eagerly contested and for long years formed the nucleus of domestic cricket in Thailand.

The Bangkok Post's return to the fold, announced at a press conference yesterday where present were Thanasak Karnasuta, organiser of the Hua Hin Sixes, and Supakorn Vejjajiva, president & chief operating officer of the Post Publishing, is a step in the same direction, an attempt to advance the cause of cricket in Thailand.

"Cricket is one of the fastest growing sports today, its roots sprouting in all corners of the globe. This is particularly true of the Twenty20 that packs enough punch even for non-traditional cricket countries to have a go at the game.

"We would want to see it happen in Thailand. The Bangkok Post is happy to be part of that process," said Supakorn of his decision to go with the Hua Hin Sixes.

Thanasak welcomed the Bangkok Post and its decision to step in at a juncture that could prove crucial to his long stated goal to rotate the strike and take cricket to all parts of Thailand. The partnership, he said, should help raise the profile of the tournament and give it a leading edge.

The tournament features 18 teams from Australia, Britain, Bangladesh, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand's own stable of up-and-coming cricketers who would be competing in three divisions _ the Cup, which is the main event; the Masters, for players 35 years old and above; and a veterans division where taking the field will be players 50 years old and over.

When you say great players you must be referring to all the Aussie players then

To be honest....your right - there are many really good Aussies come, one comes to memory, a left hander called Greg Tanagucci.. or something like that - dont think he played professionally but what a hitter, veryone would come out and watch him smash it all over the place!
I had the privilege to play in a Hua Hin team 4 or 5 years ago with Trevor Chappell which was awesome - he was at the Dusit at 8am every morning coaching local kids - a true gentleman and ambassador for cricket.
Ok we know he bowled the infamous underarm ball, ordered by his brother.

MCC go on the offensive in Hua Hin

The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) ruled the roost yesterday, winning all their matches on the second day of action at the Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Cricket Sixes.

Playing at the Dusit Thani Hotel, the MCC swept aside everything before them to put the club in reckoning for all three titles at stake in the tournament.

In the day's opening Cup action, the Melbourne side, powered by Paddy Smith's belligerent 37 retired that included four sixes, posted 70 for the loss of two wickets and then despatched Eurora by restricting their opponents to 48-1.

They then went one better in their next match and snuffed out Commonwealth Cricket Club (CCC) from Bangladesh in what was easily the day's most exciting encounter. Batting first the MCC made 71-2 with Smith contributing 26 and Stephen Gilmour 34 not out, to which the CCC replied with 68-2.

After that, they returned later to tame the Thai Colts, scoring 87-1 before restricting their opponents to 59-1.

In other matches yesterday, Melbourne Veterans beat Hua Hin Senescent in a match involving players aged 50 or older, while Melbourne Masters held off Lardna Follies in the day's last encounter to leave the latter perilously close to elimination.

The only reverse the Melbourne boys suffered yesterday was a loss to Willsmere Wanderers but that loss was not significant enough to stop the side from going through to the last four.

Willsmere also beat Thai Masters yesterday, as did Lardna Follies whose other win came at the expense of Hua Hin Hopalongs.

But two losses from as many matches certainly makes the Thai Colts' passage to the next stage an uphill battle. Today they take on Fairfield/Liverpool who boast three victories from as many games, and Thai Thevada later in the afternoon, while the CCC have just one game scheduled, also against Thai Thevada.
